Hi

I listen to a lot of music in headphones and was wondering what are the best headphones to get so that I preserve my hearing?

preserve your hearing?
the best way to preserve your hearing is to turn down your music so it doesn't play so loud

Any headphone has the potential to damage your hearing. Earbud style is said to be worse by some people, I don't know why.

If you want to get alot of enjoyment from detail & un-hyped lows & highs and have some phones that sound good at different volumes I would recomend the K240 series from AKG. I have a 15 year old pair of K240DF's that where marketed as being pretty flat & I love them. The are very comfortable and have great detail. The 240's being sold now are K240S They are going for $99.00 at ZZsounds at the moment.

I asked Harvey Gerst what headphones to get that are accurate and 'trustworthy' as far as response goes and he recommended:

Try the Sennheiser HD280's or the Beyer DT770. For cheap, the Sennheiser HD201 is a pretty good choice.

I was mainly asking which ones to get for setting up mics on acoustic, so I know what to expect. Accurate sound, imo is important for this.

Not sure what kind of headphones/what purpose you are going to use them for.

A note on earbud style headphones. The reason they can be more damaging to your hearing health is if they are "in ears" - meaning fitted into your ear canal - the sound is basically aimed directly at your eardrum. Regular phones involve more of the ear than in ears thus your ear drum doesn't take as direct a hit as it would with in ears. In ear style monitors/phones can reach an spl of 140 dB quite easily which by any standard is quite a dangrerous level to be listening at for any amount of time.

For just enjoyable listening, any of the Grado headphones are great.
