Best Friend, You See Her Smiling - opinion on the songs and mix please

Hello,

I'm Igor from Croatia and new on this forum. I formed a little home recording studio with my 2 friends and we are recording some of our own songs and ideas. I will put our 2 songs, so please tell me Your opinion on songs and mixes.

The first recording - Best Friend: http://www.box.net/shared/7s1h5gucs2

The second one - You See her smiling: http://www.box.net/shared/7ga79gofdk

Thanks
Igor

I leave the recording to others.

But I gotta say the chord progression in tune #2 was a real nice thing....not only the change from F#-7 to Fb9...and then holding it for the extra measure on the F. That was two wicked tricks on the expectations of the ear....and a real treat. Real J Lennon. Loved it. The rest of the tune is out of the Lennon playbook.... Nice tribute to his comp style. I'm sure he's your muse...or one of them? Good work!

If you can get the recording sounding as good as the tune...aces!

I also like the way the tune recovers from the vertigo of the opening progression.....and the next cycle, I expected it...and it was really pleasing. It's one of those massive snaring hooks...and right off the bat at the opening. Double good! Can't get it out of my head.

Thank You very much for the compliments. I'm very glad that You like the chord progressions. You nailed it perfectly. The Beatles are the greatest inspiration and Lennon is my favorite, although I really didn't try to copy his songwriting, but since I listen to him (and the Beatles) my whole life, I'm under big influence of them :)

Love the cello part, too. You got some classical training??

The first tune was a little foppish.....kinda like Paul's forgettable...my mom likes 'em...things. Go with the brooding style of #2. That's your forte. And maybe keep posting more, there's depth to your composing skill...can't wait to hear what's next!

Thanks :) Not at all, don't even know how to read notes. I usually record a little demo, play it in my car while I'm driving and then arrangements just come to me. I thought that cello would be nice for that melody, and I think it works just good :) I'm really glad that You like the song 'cause people usually say it is not easy for first listening.

My friend composed the first one (I only helped him with the bridge), I did the last one. He usually does sweeter melodys (more a Macca style), I like heavier stuff. You gave me some big compliments and now I'm blushing :o
I have some more songs with stranger progressions, we will record them in next few months, maybe I can record some demos and put them here.

Best Friend sounds like ELO or The Move or Wizzard. I love it, keep playing it over. Very nice.

The singing voice definitely doesn't sound Croatian. It sounds English. Could you tell us what you used to record this? Mics, tape machine, pres?

Just a classic sound.
