Well, all the other instrument forums seem to have threads for the best/favorite player of the specific instrument, but i didnt find one for this forum!

I was looking more for rock genre keyboardists, but i guess anyother genres are welcome too =P

Also feel free to just list your favorite keyboard solos too!

I like Rick Wakeman of Yes - he was good at using different sounds to give a cosmic sense to the epicness of some of their songs. Listening to him and Steve Howe duel with their solos in some of their songs is also cool.

Also, Billy Powell of Lynyrd Skynyrd. The solo at the end of Sweet Home Alabama and in the middle of Call Me the Breeze are simply amazing! How does he play so fast, especially in Call Me the Breeze?!

Also, John Evan of Jethro Tull. The introduction to their song Locomotive Breath is simply SEX!! lol

So, what about you guys?

I'd have to be Armistead Burrell Smith IV or "Zach" from pinback even though he plays a terrific bass (amazing actually) he's remarkable on the keys

I'll say Greg Hawkes of The Cars...he's not known as a "virtuoso"...but he seemed to be able to put in just the right notes (and sounds) in the right places (without getting too weird) and took the songs up a notch with his keyboard parts.

As far as keyboard solos...There's a song from the 60's called (I think) "Runaway" with a cool electric-organ sounding solo.

I agree.
Greg was amazing!!!!

Rick wakeman and keith emerson seems to fit this category perfectly :)

Bernie Worrell is the top dog.

Listen to him with P-Funk, Talking Heads, and Mos Def, and tell me that he isn't! I DARE YOU!

Ken Hensley-Uriah Heep
Richard Tandy-ELO
Keith Emerson-ELP
Jon Lord-Deep Purple
and 100's more..............

Brian Eno, of course. I love the way his keyboards don't sound like someone playing the keyboard but rather like some weird ambient noise.

A lot of his sound is the Yamaha DX7 plus the crystal echoes preset of the Eventide H3000 (though apparently he also used an AMS pitch shifter to get the same great pitchshift effect.

Standout tracks:

"An ending" from Apollo, atmospheres and soundtracks
The intro from U2's "Where the streets have no name", complete with cricket noises buried deep in the mix

Santiago

Brent Mydland and Keith Godchaux from the Dead, and of course Bruce Hornsby.

Melvin Seals on B3 hands down. Check out his solo on "Lucky Old Sun" from Jerry's Wiltern Theatre run in the late 80's.

Maybe not the greatest but I've always liked Billy Preston.

rpe

Christine McVie.

Not showy by any means but very good at layering parts on pianos and B3.

Speaking of crickets........

When the Dead debuted "Blues For Allah" Healy had a bunch of crickets in the basement of the Great American. But they were being drowned out by the HVAC equipment.

So Healy pulled the fuses. That was August 13, 1975. You could get away with stuff like that back in the day.

Robin Lumley of Brand-X and Jan Hammer of Mahavishnu Orchestra. I also like Jimmy Smith, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, etc. and most of the keyboardists already mentioned. ;)

Michael Pinnella of Symphony X for his amazing and beautiful compositions

Enya: beautiful music, enough said.
