What is the best way to go on a digital recorder. I need to record at least 16 tracks simulatniously.
I am not sure whether to go with something like ADAT or whether to go with the self contained units that use hard drives or cd roms. I have a yamaha MD-8 now (minidisc). I like it but I wish the media was more standard and it had more tracks.

Yeah, you can spend as much as you like on a digital recorder, up to $200,000 plus.

If you need 16 simultaneous tracks of recording it kind of narrows it down a bit. I don't know if the fostex does that but this one does.

Very Nice ;)

The Fostex VF-16 or VF-160 will most certainly do the trick. I've recorded up to 13 tracks simultaneously (run out of mics) with my VF16 using a Fostex VM88 digital mixer as an external AD converter and mic preamp. Now I'm thinking about replacing the VM88 with a Behringer UB2442fx-pro mixer and a VC-8 converter to gain more XLR inputs.

The roland 2480 is a great recorder and i whould buy one myself if i had the money, but the more tracks you record sim. on the 2480, the less quality of the sound it's going to be. (44-bit,33-bit,16-bit,) or at least that's what the brouchure told me. i geuss you could find out for sure at roland's website ( www.rolandusa.com) When i upgrade my studio to pro. (in a few years,) i'm going to go with the 24 tracks digital recorders from aleses and buy me a mixer and a lot of effect processors and compressers. you just have more flexiblility that way.

S**t i'm a horribly speller..... :D

I am just curious as to why you need to record 16 tracks at once!
