What is the best DI box under $100. It would mainly be used for recording bass guitar. Thanks.

if you can find an active DI box at that price, that would be optimal. I have a countryman, but it's probably a little too pricey for you.

Check out eBay and see if you can get a Tech21 Sansamp for around $100. I have two of them and they are great for bass and rhythm guitar.

isn't the sansamp gt-2 a pedal, though? i was thinking mainly about getting a DI, since i've heard those are good for bass

ok sorry...forget that last comment...i thought you were talking about something different...

DI100 by Behringer

I use 2 DI 100 by Behringer for the bass and the electro-acoustic guitars. It sounds great in a balanced / 24 bit / 48 kHz / environment !
It costed me less than EUR 40 per box.

1 EUR = 0.88 USD

To make the previous message understandable ...

I second Patrick's opinion. I also have a couple of Behringer DI-100 (35$ each), and they work for just about anything. I use them to get a good signal from my keyboard, to record electric bass, and to play electro-accoustic guitar through my mixer. Totally clean sound. Great value for money.

You could probably make a DI box that sounds every bit as good as a countryman for about $50 total! Jensen tranformer, a few jacks, couple switches, etc... and a Radio Shack "project box" is all it takes. I believe Jensen even has schematics on their website that are quite easy to follow. I have been meaning to build a couple for a while. Great DI box (better than the Behringer...the Behringer sounds okay enough..but it DOESN'T sound as good as a Countryman...AND, don't BREAK that damn Behringer (open one up and see how delicate it actually is)) because it would be quite difficult to fix...and I see broken ones all the time on live sound gigs....for that, I would much rather use a ProCo, Whirlwind, almost ANYTHING else....

A little time investment and you have nearly the best you can have at a price comparable to middle of the road stuff. Sweet deal really.

I have an old Stewart Electronics Active/Passive DI box, I haven't used it since the eary 90's. It worked well back then but I don't know if they are still around. At the time they were considered one of the best, maybe I should rack it. Check ebay.

Peace,
Dennis

Actually, I've found the Behringer DI to be very robust and sturdy.
I've seen many that are dented and knocked around and they still work perfectly.
No, they don't sound like a Countryman, but for the price, you can't go wrong. You'll get 2 for under $100.

ok...is the sansamp bass driver better than the behringer or is the behringer better? i can afford either one so that's not an issue

Hey Ed, what if someone were to simply rip apart one of the Behringers and stick a Jensen in there? :) Pardon my electronic ignorance, but is that feasable?

I think you will want to take a look at EXACTLY is in the Behringer DI. I was very disappointed, and understood why they are so delicate.

For all that hassle and cost, you could STILL make a better DI box.

Build it yourself

Build your own. It will cost more than 50.00 though. The jenson XFRMR alone is more than 50.00. There are alot of solid state DI's that are killer sounding too. Look in the electronic projects for musicians book. Craig has some pretty good stuff in there.

Countryman Type 85's are awesome. You can have one for about $150.

Got three. Don't use DOD, ProCo, Whirlwind anymore... well, maybe for live sound these are okay.

Chessrock:

putting a jensen in a behringer would not be possible, as the behringer is active and does not use a transformer.

Hey, thanks Cavedweller. I'm intrigued with the idea of the DIY approach. But unfortunately, my compentency with electronics doesn't advance much more beyond the point of replacing parts with other parts, if you know what I'm saying. :)

So I in other words, I should look at something cheap, passive and with transformer? Thanks.
