I am looking at upgrading my Sabian B8 cymbals too sometihng much better.

I want to only buy once and not twice like I've done with other gear. What cymbals are recommended for the best sound in recording. I am doing pop-punk and radio friendly music.

Thanks a lot,
Ryan

I don't think there are any cymbals that are universaly known as "the best". Its all a matter of preference. Your best bet is to find a place that is well stocked with a variety of quality cymbals and try them out, found out what fits your sound. I personally like the way Sabian Paragons sound I also like Sabian HHX's but I'm a Sabian guy, some prefer Zildjian, some Paiste and so on.

it's all about opinions.......

i like zildjin AA med thin to thin.

Brands are kind of subjective since they all make great sounding cymbals. To me, the key is to use thinner cymbals. They react/respond faster and they get out of the way - they also tend to have a more musical sound.

I am essentially looking for "the standard." Can you recommend the good standards. As far as size and thickness, should I stay within the 14" to 18" range and thin-medium? Also Dark or brilliant? Remember, this is for recording ONLY. Thanks.

cymbals

alright dude, i have a drumset and i went to my freinds house once and he had paiste cymbals and i was like wut the hell is that, lol but boy was i wrong, those are good ass cymbals man i have not had one dissapointment with those they are durable and very affordable .any paist is good if it says paiste on it your in business, and im not just sayin this cuz i like paiste im sayin cuz its the truth .

Right now I use AA metal X's but I have yet to record with them, although the one time I did do some serious recording i was using a complete set Paiste Alfa 802's!

The were awesome for recording , but not really powerfull enough for live stuff. just my .02

I mix mine up. I prefer Zildjian K top Z bottom hats. Sabian HH ride. Piaste Signature fast crashes

Thats what I do. Most people think they should have only one brand of cymbal, but its a better idea to get the best of each brand. I have zildjian splashes, with sabian ride and meinl hat.

If you want something good, and are on a tight budget, then the Stagg DH brillaint series are good. I know I'm probably going to get laughed at, but I have them, and i love them, and whenever i play I get people coming up and asking "man, what cymbals are those. Stagg? WTF?". Only thing about them that I'm not hugely keen on is the hats and ride, but that may be cause i tried to save even more money and bought 12" hats and 19" crash/ride.

For crashes, I'm a big fan of Zildjian A Customs... but I love my Paiste ride, as well. Definitely depends on the sound you're going for, though. Tim's right on about using the thinner cymbals.. they make it easier... although if you're a really heavy drummer, it is possible to break them. One thing's for sure: NEVER mail order cymbals. Go to a store and listen. You can buy a crappy $300 ride or an amazing $20 china... just gotta search them out.
