Go with a nice dynamic, you'll thank me later.

At this point in time you may be thinking to yourself....hmmmm not a very helpful forum... may I suggest the search function for this particular request. The vultures that reside in this place actually love this question.

It's Swahili money, baby.

If that's your budget, then get the MXL 990/991 combo pack. They are not the best at anything but that'll give you a couple of mics that don't absolutely suck with which you should be able to tinker around with for a bit on most anything you might try at home.

The AT2020 is not bad. It sort of reminds me of a Beyerdynamic Soundstar MKII.

My friends, Mark Gifford (recording mod at Harmony Central) and Harvey Gerst, like the MXL V67. I don't like it but they do and they seem to know what they are doing moreso than I do so there...

Thanks for the suggestions! Why would you go with a dynamic over a condencer for recording?

Well, first, you can go with a unidirectional, which means that your room won't play as much of a factor. Secondly, a nice dynamic makes it a little easier (in my experience) to get the vocals to sit in the mix. Also, the can take a beating and do not require phantom power. Don't get me wrong, I have condensers as well, there are just many times when recording rock music where I'm just not liking the way a condenser sounds.

it depends, is it for rap vocals or everything else?

Don't know if you own a SM57 but they can used on vocals as well also a great vocal mic if you can hold for more cash usually 225-250$ used on eBay and 325$ is a Shure SMB 7 used by a lot of pros. Good luck on what you decide to go with.

For under $120, don't get one. Especially not the MXL 990/991 pack, it's not useful. Get yourself a 57 and then get a decent condensor sometime... later.

I'd take a cheap ribbon over a cheap condenser too, but then again I'm a caveman with too many microphones...
