Hi, as my title says I am looking for the best price vs performance clip on Mic. It will be used for religious Congregation speeches though we have a non clip-on mic for that, so it will be mostly used during the actual Friday Prayer (I am part of my Muslim Student's Association) which is why it needs ot be a clip-on mic. Anything that's reliable, gives out the least static and that's moderately sensitive will do. Reliability is the biggest thing as it will be used once a week; every Friday.

The mic will be plugged into our mixer and our mixer is plugged into our receiver. The speakers will be plugged into the receiver.

I am new to all this, as you may realize from my post and the category I posted this under; so sorry if I am not clear.

to sum this up: Please post any good clip-on mics for the price & any store suggestions, or brands or anything to look for when purchasing one (Keep in mind I live in Canada :)). Also we are not sure how much to spend, however this is something we really need, so as long as you think its best for the price, please post it here.

Any & All help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Shure's WL85 is sort of a staple...

+1 It's tough to beat Shure's price/performance. Though you would need to purchase the lavaliere mic separately, for absolute bullet-proof functionality you can look at Lectrosonic or Zaxcom. Those brands are targeted at production companies and their price reflects that market but if you're going to find yourself in a variety of locations where you may want to be able to choose between low power for a small closed-in space and high power to reach across a large venue then they may be better suited to your needs. $$$$.

Outside the USA, the economy end of Shure's radio mic range isn't all that well thought of (their expensive pro stuff is fine). I'd personally be recommending Sennheiser--probably the EW100 G3 model.

If this is too expensive for the budget, you could look at the Sennheiser Freeport which is essentially the same mic as a Trantec (so you could look at Trantec as well and go with whichever is the best deal.

Some people I know have recommended JTS radio mics--never tried them myself but might be worth a look.

Thanks everyone for their response, looking at them right now, but just spoke to the Executive team and at the moment we only would be able to get a clip-on mic, for $100 or so. I saw some of the stuff you guys gave, but it doesn't have to be wireless, and we are looking for a clip-on mic only. Sorry for not being specific enough in my first post, but like I mentioned I am new to this but I am trying to educate myself as much as possible about this so please be patient with me :). If there's any suggestions for the price range please post :).

Like always any and all suggestions would be of help, along with all the replies given this far :).

We're not talking about wireless mics (although you're probably finding body packs that come *with* those mics). The WL85's are maybe $75 or so (well, it's been some time since I had to buy a batch of 'em, but I think they were around that much).

OK thanks, yep that's what it is, it's just hard to find those mics, stand alone without any body packs etc (sorry for assuming before doing more searching). Also I tried searching for the Shure WL185 but couldn't find it in Canada stand-alone. I think the best thing to do is try going to a local recording store and see if they have it, as well as ask for their recommendation. Though do post your other suggestions as well & I will try to gather all suggestions in one paper, and go from them, while getting other people's opinions and looking at availability in my area.

Also I spoke to some people I know and there's a slight chance they can pick up one when they head to the states; so if anyone know's any great stores in America for that as well do list them (though Canada is preferred so I can go there myself :)).

Hi, sorry for the double post but I found the Sennheiser ME-2 for $80 in one of the stores not too far away from me, though the Shure WL85 I can't find it at the moment by itself in Canada, will try looking more though how does that mic compare with the Shure WL85? Is it the same, more or less, is it worse, better? Let me know (I realize this is a somewhat subjective question; but just overall for my use).

I found the Shure to be of higher fidelity to the source.

I actually find the ME2 to be the better mic. There's something about the Shure sound that I've never got on with very well.

However, make sure you've got the right model with a small battery pack so it can work without the connection to a radio mic belt pack.

Exactly, hence my caution.

Most lav mics come either with bare wires or an appropriate connector to go into a radio mic belt pack (which provides the necessary bias voltage. Very few are designed to work with a standard XLR/phantom set up.

Most Sony mics (common in TV) come with a connector that allows it to either work with an AA battery or adapt 48v phantom to the much lower voltage required. There's also one model of Sennheiser which had an in-line box that held a button battery to do the same job--I had one of those for years and never had to change the battery.

However, off the shelf, most lavs are not set up to plug directly into a mixer for wired use.
