Thinking bellow £200, cheapest usable pair possible for recording? Behringer? MXL? Studio Projects?

Hope you have some interesting opinions.. Thanks.. Dom

The cheapest pair I ever used was MXL603s...but I liked my AT3035

c1000s AKG?

How about the C1000? Going cheap these days

The C1000's and for that matter Rode's NT-3 are limited in their usefulness!!!

In the affordable area and in no particular order, you should seriously stick to MXL603's (or their MXL equivelant), Studio Projects C4 or (genuine) Oktava 012's. Rode's NT-5's might also be an option. Without knowing exactly what you want to record with them, I can't be more specific.

The C1000S goes for about $270CD. I use it for my live, vocal mic and love it but haven't found a use for it in the studio.
Don't be fooled by the price of the C2 though.
I have a bunch of Behringer large diaphragms but find them a tad bright and requiring a lot of gain.
The C2 lacks a bit of fullness but you'd never know until you did a shoot out.
Live or in the studio, it's a great wee microphone.
I'm not big on recommending microphones just because I've got them but I will recommend the C2.

The ones I've been most impressed by are the CAD e70. They're known under a few other names, but really an outstanding SDC mic with pad and rolloff.

+1 on the e70's, I got a pair by luck, they're labeled as Astatic CTM-1000. The guy I got them from on C'list had pictures that didn't match up with Astatic's pictures. I put 2 and 2 together and gave the guy $40.00, just like he asked.:D

I saw these a few months ago and I thought it was too good a deal to pass up so I went ahead and got them. tiny little CAD small diaphragms. They are small enough to be used as Tom mics too. (they come with the screw in part for attaching it to a drum rim clip.) CAD CM217

They sound best as overheads but I like the way they distort a bit when you stick them on a tom it's got a sort of lo fi thing to it. I never thought that would be a sound that was used on toms in a professional setting until I heard a few songs by the killers with a distorted tom sound like the pres had been pushed too hard. I use PG81s for overheads usually but these CADs were just too great a deal to pass up.

Hey!
Nice going, Sam the Man. Check out the reviews on these mics. May buy a pair, down the road. :)

I have a couple of mics from Naiant Studios. They're brilliant! An MSH1 &, I think, an MSH4 - the latter includes a mico tube so has a very diff sound to the 1. Excellent, tiny & robust too. That range is now gone BUT the X series is an upgrade from them:

On a totally different level I also love my Sony ECM19bs - they aren't flash or expensive by any means, (in fact they're quite old - late 70's and connect through a mini jack so need an adapter) but they capture things well & a subtle change of position will produce a change of EQ. There is some self noise that needs filtering but I love 'em.
I have a Behri LCD, a 1 I think, which is quite good &super cheap.

Yeah I love how small they are. You can get a good sound anywhere with them. I saw on the website it says that the response is 40hz-13khz. The response shown on the actual documentation that came with the mic says 30hz-18khz and has the graph confirming that. It has the the roll off on the high end like most condensers have starting at around 13k but it can pickup past 13k for sure.

These mics for the price can't be beat for live drum over heads.

Disease....What are you hoping to record once you get a pair of SDC ?
IF you want diversity with them and in your price range do go with the Cad e70

I want to use for recording, mainly extra overheads for drums . . .got T.Bone SC180's which I'm not that happy with feel bit ripped off, they don't have m,uch highs.. detailed but just don't like the curve . . . if I can it would be good for a pair of real versatile mics for a whole host of applications so nice and realistic sounding and flat....

Thanks for help so far... anyone heard the Behringer C4's? Why release same mics as C2 but in black they must be upgrade?

I'm thinking C2's at mo to get me by other mics seem little too much CAD e70's maybe bit too expensive, maybe if I could find for $40 lol

What is it with these naiant studio mics they are really un usual interesting little mics.. They look hand made lol! Strange features but high inherant noise would but me off..
