Hello, my name is Mike and i recently started thinking about getting together my own home pc studio type thing. I mean it seems to be a hell of alot cheaper than paying by the hour. lol. Anyways i bought a whole bunch of prog's. Cakewalk, Nuendo, CEP2, Sound Forge 6.0 just to name a few. My machine is a Intel Celeron Processor, 400mHz, 384 mb of ram. I have a basic sound that came with the machine. I was wondering what would materials should i buy (mic's, extrenal mixer's) along with what would be the best card for my pc. I dont want to spend too much on the card itself because i still have other materials to buy. I just want something decent that sounds good. What does everyone think?

Thank's for the help!

Time to buy a new computer too. Sorry to break it to you man, but your system is much too slow for anything more than minor audio.

I'd recommend an Athlon system with a Via KT333 chipset, or a Pentium 4 with an Intel 845 chipset.

It may not be a must to buy a new machine.
You can probably get by with 4-8 tracks if you dont use too many effects that load up the CPU & Ram.
But a faster PC would be something to think about.
I would go with an audiophile 24/96 for low budget but yet great entry level card.

Oh c'mon, this computer is fine. Just don't try to use an internet browser, games, videophone, or anything else on it. Make it a streamlined audio computer. Make sure to use an appropriate OS such as win 98 or 95 and don't bog it down with apps.

I have a 450 AMD K63 that can do 24+ tracks of 16bit audio with no problems. Remember more than 512 RAM on a machine like that is useless and get a dedicated 80+gig 7200rpm HD for audio only.

Dude, that's like over a grand in software! You could have

a. Bought a very decent (like 2GHz) system with a decent card like an Audiophile.
b. Hired a studio for about 30 hours of time.

Why would you buy Cakewalk and Nuendo?

...

Hey thanks for any suggestions so far. I thought i would try different prog's. I heard each prog has its pro's and con's. Either way ill check out the audiophile 24/96. I just want something basic that sounds decent. thanks for any help so far.
