I guess the title says it pretty well. I'm using a Tascam 2488 and I think I need an outboard compressor. I'm particularilly interested in buying one that is best suited for drums. I want to spend as little as possibe but want something better than the Tascam onboard.

Art Pro VLA.Get upgrade tubes for it.Put it across the drum buss...Smile.Buy you significant other dinner with your leftover money.

The VLA would certainly be a good choice.

Another one I might recommend -- which is even better, in my humble opinion -- would be a used JBL 7110. You can find those pop up on ebay from time-to-time. Another idea would be the Aphex Dominator. It's sort of a dual-band peak limiter ... which is very cool, by the way, for squashing the crap out of drums transparently and with very minimal coloration.

But if you want the whole exploding room sound, distressor-on-nuke-mode kinda' thing, I'd say go with the 7110. VLA would be really good for punchy-sounding drums with a little pumping/breathing action going on.

I do second the 7110's...I wish I had kept mine...The Dominator is a nice piece as are the Expressors and the Compellors...The bad thing about the Aphex stuff is this....If you arent fairly experienced at hearing what bandwidth and limiting types of compression is doing to something you might not hear it at all.As far as the Aphex quality it is high. I love mine. And Chess's take on the VLA making a nice crunch is very accurate. Its only what I use mine for.
