BEST BOOK? (home recording start to finish)

Hi All,

What do you feel is the best book to take me to the next level for all facets of home recording? I love the forums but it can be very time consuming when you need a quick answer.

There are so many books out there its hard to choose one.

I am a beginner who's been recording using Sonar for a few years but never really sat down to learn the fundamentals. I really don't know much...just enough to get by with a demo quality recording.
 
Thanks for the suggetions. I'm looking for something to re-iterate the foundations but more importantly looking for mixing suggestions, frequency suggestions, what to do to make the vocals cut thru the mix, what not to do that makes your mix muddy, what effects to use, and everything that applies to using a DAW like Sonar which is what I use. I would like something I can reference on a regular basis while recording. Is this book good for those types of things?

I keed, I keed... But if that's your thing, it has some useful audio tidbits. CCRMA and other things. For software stuff anyway. Hardware is a whole different ball game. And yet in terms of recording and distribution, one cannot exist without the other. Noting how my gear acquisition keeps being a bit stagnant, since I keep finding new software tricks to make what I have seem brand new again. Or at least capable of new things with no hardware changes per say.

Big ol can of worms now. Maybe the Sonar guys would be able to address specifics.
 
Thanks for all the suggestions. I will look into each of these. What really sux is that Chapters or Indigo doesn't carry many, if any of these in stock so it's hard to get a good idea of what exactly they contain...c'est la vie.
 
Check out the Sonar Power books by Scott Garrigus. Well worth the $. Includes some stuff about optimizing your computer for audio, some pretty basic stuff about audio and MIDI, as well as walk-through tutorials to demonstrate the different features of Sonar and how to find your way through all the menus to get to features that aren't readily apparent.

Also check out Youtube for Sonar video tutorials. If you are interested in MIDI drums check out the vids from Toontrack about using EZDrummer. In fact, there are vids about just about any product you can imagine on Youtube. Some from manufacturers and many from end-users that are more informative and demonstrate the products better than the manufacturers do.

A couple of books worth looking at in addition to those already suggested, "Guerilla home recording" , by Karl Coryat"The mixing engineer's handbook" by Bobby Owsinski and if you can find it, "Emergency ! First aid for home recording" by Paul White.

I bought the first mixing audio AND the guerilla one (except look for vers 2) and both are awesome.

I also bought this dvd awhile ago and it helped;

The musicians home recording handbook is a great reference for basic recording.
