I need another 8 ins to my FW1884, and there are quite few choices...wondering what you guys have to say on the subject.

Well, budget is flexible, but I guess a grand or less would be great....basically, what are some other choices in Octopre's class, and who likes what?

Its a fairly limited class at that price point. It's pretty much the usual suspects. Octopre, Octane, Whatever Mackie's version is, digimax lt, and the always loved, world beater the behringer ada8000.

I've got an Octane and love it. The pres are very quiet and have tons of headroom (great for drums). The M-S encoder is VERY cool too - I love it for overheads. That's my $0.02.

I have the Octane and like the sound of it a lot. Nice nuetral, quiet pre's. Nothing fancy about the sound, but no harshness or weird coloration or hiss either.

i have a floor model digimax lt (never even been plugged up) i can ship for $725.00 if you are interested. pm me...

Quick question

Hey all,

I was reading this thread and looking at these devices, and have a noob-ish question, as my DAW setup uses a 2ch USB box and a mixer going into it and I haven't begun to really start drooling over better stuff until recently.

Can someone briefly explain how these differ from the firepod functionally? I took note that they don't have a firewire out, so how do they eventually interface with a computer?

Thanks,

JD

They go through the ADAT output, which will send 8 channels of digital audio in 24bit, up to 48KHz, and some of them will do 4 channels at 96KHz. Then you would need an audio interface that has an ADAT input to connect the two. The Firepod is an interface that has 8 preamps, but no ADAT in, although their new FireStudio will add ADAT.

they are talking about preamps. the firebox is both a sound card and preamp on one box.
