Currently I play a Rivera S120 head through a Crate 4x12 cabinet. Even though the Crate is loaded with Celestions (not sure what model), it pretty much sounds like crap, especially recorded. I'm sick of carrying around the 4x12 and don't really need the volume, so I want to get a really good sounding 2x12 cabinet. Right now I'm looking at Marshall 1936, Genz Benz George Lynch 2x12, Carvin Legacy 2x12 and others. The Carvin has Vintage 30's in it and is purportedly well-built, however it only comes wired in mono and I need a stereo cab, so I'd have to rewire it (but its only $300!).

So, I wanted to know what you guys favorite 2x12 cabinets are to record (as that will be the primary purpose these days) or if you have any opinions on the ones I listed. Thanks!!

Well, even though nobody answered my thread....

I just got a Genz Benz 2x12 Flex cabinet and this thing ROCKS. Tighter bottom than the crate, better transient response, more edgy....awesome. I highly recommend it and it looks really cool with my Rivera head on top. I might try swapping out the Genz Benz speakers for some Vintage 30s one of these days...watch out!

Is your 2x12 open backed or sealed? I made my combo into a cab a while back and left it open backed, I'm very happy with the sound but have thought many times of making another to go with it but sealed.

I have a Marshall 1966A. It came with my Marshall Artist 3203 head. Sort of a 3/4 sized half stack. Instead of side by side, the speakers are "kitty corner". I like it ok, although I'd love to try a 4 x 10 or maybe get the 1966B straight cab. So if anyone has a 1966B straight cab, sell it to me!

Well, this 2x12 is actually ported on the front. Its definately bigger than the average 2x12 and deeper than my 4x12. The speakers are also mounted at a slight angle which is supposed to reduce standing waves. Its the same cabinet as the George Lynch G-Flex 2x12 before they started putting his name on it. Genz Benz
