Strange person.
Got My set of B5's in the mail today. Damn! These mics are REALLY QUIET! I turned the gain right up on my UB802 mixer and there is no noise at all on my Korg D16 meters. Granted I had to unplug the fridge and turn the ducted heating off but I couldn't beleive how quiet they are!!! Blow My MXL V67g out of the water.
Then there's the sound of these mics :D . I'll post a test song as soon as I get the chance. In an XY config, these rule!!!!!! Before I was using either 2 ecm8000s or my V67g with a SM57 and these 2 sound waaaaay better
With the omni caps on you more or less get exactly how it sounds to your ears so that's an added bonus.
I also found the bass rolly offy switch thingo really good if I wanted to mic a bit closer for more attack (correct me if my lingo is wrong)

There we go, just had to get that out of my system. :)
 
They do seem to do a nice job considering the price. I have a pair of Senn sdc's that cost 6 times as much and they do not give that much away (if anything) to them.

more quiet than the ecm8000 with b5 as omni but I still heard something on mine, I'll need to switch pre's for a better test.

your berry mixer is quiet also?

Yeah my UB802 is dead silent. It says in the manual that self noise is 0.0007% or something like that. Obviously the mic sounds better when plugged in my noisy (in comparison) MIC200 pre but I wanted to see mainly how the self noise of the mic was. I'll post a test tonight and another one when my DMP3 arrives.
What pre do you have?
 
Alright it's taken me a while but I've been real busy. Here's a REALLY ROUGH 30 second clip thing I threw together. Vocals and guitar both done with the B5 and I added a little reverb but no eq or compression. Again excuse the crap guitar playing/out of tune singing.
The song is Garden Grove by sublime.
 
sound pretty thin, especially against those drum samples. guess it was a rough mix though. I doubt they are quieter than the V67 but i have no doubt they are quieter than the ECM800s. If those are all you have to compare with of course its going to be a huge improvement.

Yeah my V67 is way noisier. All I did mix wise was add a touch of reverb as a master effect. No EQ or compression
I'll do a better test when I get time, that was done all in one take.
 
Also I had the bass roll off switch on when I did the recording
 
granted i was listening to the sound on some desktop speakers that came with this gateway computer, it sounded pretty decent...
 
sorry, ill elaborate a little more.

It sounds thin as in it sounds distant. Could be the distance and the sound of your room in general, and then also having that low pass on (what is it set to) would make it sound even thinner. It was distinct and clear but it just didnt really have a full spectrum depth. Just seemed a little washed out with high frequencies. The reason why i say im surprised that they are quieter than the V67 is because small diaphragm condensers usually have more self noise than a large but that could be totally irrelevant also depending on the mic. I think any mic in the world is quieter than the ECM8000s so thats no surprise to me :D.

And really if thats all you have to compare with as far as large and small diaphragm condensers, then of course theres going to be a huge difference then what your used to hearing. But wait until you get to hear a Neumann KM184 or something like that and you will have a totally different perspective.

danny, how about comparing the b5 and 67g with mics in their own price category. $100 or less seems to be the price category this is referring to. Mics $300 or less would give a broader range of opinions and other useful good but still cheap and decent mics. arguing your point with mics that are over $400 when the guy is using $90 mics is kinda rude and obnoxious.
 
sorry i didnt mean to come across as obnoxious.

im glad they are working great for you. sorry if i offended by comparing with the KM184. My point was more about advice to try out a couple a different mics similiar to the B5s, instead of saying things like it rules and hyping it all up when he really doesnt have much to compare to. I feel it would have been much more informative if he stated what other mics he has tried in that range and why he chose the B5s, which would be a real comparison.

But anyway, i do apologize if i offended anyone at all and i didnt mean to get on a high throne if i did.

Danny, the only condensors I've compared it to are the V67 and the ecm8000s, my hobbit hole uni room sounds dreadful recording anything and I did say it was "REALLY ROUGH"
I just got a Studio Projects B3 off eBay so when it arrives I'll compare it too. Also I have recorded in a studio with a U87 and mostly NT3s and sm57s. I hate the sound of nt3's and didn't find the U87 to be anything special either.
Basically I chose the b5's because mics here aren't easy to get a hold of. I was more of less going blind unless I wanted to pay double for a pair of NT5s. I had a set of ecm8000s and liked the sound of them but didn't like the noise (I still prefer the ecm8000s as drum overheads though).
I read on this bbs that self noise was on par with the Mk012 or 603 and not many people had any real experience with the mic so I went for it.
Also I was really excited when I wrote that because I had just received them, plugged them in at a mates house and then wrote about them on the bbs all within an hour.
