The other night I wondered how much the sound on my little-old Porta02 would have been improved if I'd been using it with good mics and a preamp. I've got part of the answer - adding preamp (and turning the input gain back to 'line') definitely made some good mics 'come alive'. Recorded an A/B with a nylon string guitar, mic'd with a Shure '57 and '58. Here are the clips in case anyone's curious. The difference was even more profound 'live' - - these mp3's were made using a cheap 16-bit card that I've got for now.
