is there a benefit to recording and mixing down with broadcast wave files rather than normal wave files? i know the broadcast files hold information like artist and song, but where would that be useful?

It certainly won't hurt, if your application supports it. There was a time 4 or 5 years ago when a lot of apps didn't support broadcast wave, but now it seems like all the big packages do. If you were going to be sharing files with people who use older software, or making something like sample CDs for the general public, it might not be the best thing to do. Howver, it is an AES (Audio Engineering Society) standard, and it's pretty well establsihed at this point. There is also other information stored by the standard, including sample root note and a few others, that's useful for some applications.
