I like the sound of my POD X3, but it's turning out to be unstable. Severe drop-outs. Many people have posted similar complaints. Anyway, I'm considering an alternative hardware emulator. The V-Amp Pro. Anybody here have one? How do you like it? I'm mostly interested in the hi-gain Marshalls and Mesa Boogie amps. I will only be using it for recording into my computer and personal practicing with headphones.

I have the V-AMP combo.

My only complaint about this amp is the speaker they put in it, and since you are looking at the V-AMP Pro, this won't be a problem.

This unit is very versatile. There are something like 32 amp models that you can combine with 15 cab models and add with any effects you can imagine. With the right setup, you can get any sound you want.

The high-gain channels on the amp are pretty sweet. I play alternative rock to hard rock and can choose from about 6 amp models that will all get the job done. The built in noise-gate comes in handy too.

Get it. I have V-Amp 2 (same thing just not rack-mounted) and I'm absolutely in love with the little blue thing. My main settings are California Clean amp (based on Mesa Boogie MkII c.) with 4x10" V-amp custom cabinet simulation. Totally mind-blowing and extremely lucid tone. I use my distortion pedal for high-gain, but V-Amp's high-gain amps do the job just as well (I just prefer my stomp-box, gives me more control).

It has 5 modes (3 studio, 2 live - basically a toggle between amp/cab/effects bypass, stereo mode, dry channel + wet channel modes etc). Good effects, also has 2 dynamic processors (compressor + noise gate, but I have a sepparate hardware unit so I can't say how good they are coz I've never used them with V-Amp). I plug it to my Marshall combo and it gives me the lows I had no idea my MG30 was capable of producing. The headphones channel is perfect.

My only problem is pre-sets toggle - there's about a second-long delay when you switch from one mode to another. But if you're gonna use it just for recording you're gonna overdub anyway, so that shouldn't be an issue.

I dunno, for that price you can just go and buy it without second thoughts.

Seems from what I read some people love Behringer and others think they suck. Kind of like anything else I guess.

Can I plug my Shure 58 into an adapter and then into the input on the front to record myself talking into Reaper? I often preface my guitar solos with a vocal cue introducing the name of the song the solo is for that I'm recording.

Behringer is one of those companies where you really have to ask "what model" before answering the question. They're all over the map. They make cheap gear that's usually okay build quality, often with somewhat noisy sound quality. The V-Amp Pro, however, at least if the Bass V-Amp Pro is any indication, is a pretty good piece of gear.

Yeah I don't see why not. Or you can use an 1/4" mike cable and plug it in straight coz it has a pre-amp (obviously). I've never tried V-Amp for vocals though, I have a Behringer Xenyx mixer which used to go straight into my roland standalone recorder (until one certain whoreface bitch stole it from me :D )

I really like my V-Amp Pro. The only difference between it and a V-Amp2 is the Pro has more output options. I used to play in a band with a guy who used a POD and it ticked him off that my V-Amp sounded better than his POD and I paid less than half of what he did. IMO the V-Amp is one of the better products Behringer makes.

It's got a lot of editing capabilities when you plug it into a computer. The only problem is the slight pause between patches when playing live, as mentioned previously. I've always wondered if this would be any different using a MIDI foot-controller.

Thanks for all the quick feedback. I think I will order it. I tried playing through my X3 again tonight, and man it sounds really bad. I'm positive now that something is broken inside. My preset based on a Marshall JCM-900 is horribly weak sounding. It used to sound really ballsy and strong, with lots of volume and gain. Now it's a mere shadow of itself.

I'm going to call Line 6 and tell them about it. Maybe they will have me send it in for repair or replacement. But even if they give me a new one, there is a good chance that one will fail also, since they all are the same with the same schematics and components. And I shelled out $400 for this thing, and it's only about maybe 8 months old. Pretty sad I think. As good as it sounds when functioning properly, it's rather useless if it breaks down and doesn't deliver consistently.

Man gutted about your POD. But same as plays41, it's IMO as good if not better than POD , and I've only paid $160 for it (in the UK! It should be alot cheaper in the States). Comes with a footswitch as well.

I love my v-amp so much that I purchased a second one....I found out this weekend that the spdif out sound like shit though....I have tried it connected several ways, and I have caught a lot of shit from other members here that the way I connect it is bad...but I like it and everyone I have recorded with it likes it so here it is....

guitar > v-amp > analog out from v-amp > pre > delta 1010

I usually use channle 1 of my Octane as the pre but I have used several others as well...

here are a few songs that were recorded using a v-amp for 100% of the guitars....

Lucky by A Road Eternal
Meanest 2 inches by A Road Eternal
Vengence is Born by A Road Eternal

I think I pretty much have to use the S/PDIF to go into my sound card. Even though my card also has analog inputs, I read in the Behringer manual that when you use the analog outputs, the 1/4 inch ones I mean, it bypasses the speaker cabinets. And I don't want to do that. So I think I pretty much have to hook it up through the digital cable. Should sound good that way too.

I guess another option, correct me if I'm wrong, would be to take two XLR mic cords and pick up two XLR to 1/4 inch adapters and connect it to the analog inputs on my sound card. I think that would also work.

what do you mean it bypasses the cabs? are you going to mic a cab or use the v-amp direct?

on the songs I posted, I connected it like I said before, and used the rectified hi gain or whatever setting it is and turned the gain to about half way

It says right in the manual that when you use the analog outputs, the speaker simulation is not present. I suspect the reason for this is that Behringer intended those outputs to be sent to a regular guitar amp, in which the guitarist is also using his cabinet.

I will not be using this thing with an amp, or in any live environment. Only for personal practice and recording into my computer. So I don't think I would want to use those particular outputs.

Unless you have shown it works fine doing it that way. I'm kinda confused too.

oh well....I didnt realize that....purchased both of mine used and dont have a manual....anyway...I like the sound Im getting with my current setup, however like I said, I tried the spdif for the first time this weekend....although it sounded like shit, maybe I need to play around with it a little more and see what else I can come up with....

I believe there are four options as to what the analog output will be. I don't remember the names right now but there's something like "Studio 1" et al. I'm pretty sure you can choose what comes out of the 1/4 inch outs. Good luck.

I need to try and find my manual so I can make sure what the exact options are. It's been a while since I've had to use the instructions. I mainly just keep a list of patch numbers and what they consist of. Arrrgh!

Live modes don't use either cab or amp similation, or both. In that case V-amp is used as a multi-effects processor.

so are the amp and cab sims only accessable through the spdif out?

i love my v-amp pro and would buy another one in a heartbeat if it was broke/stolen!
The thing with the delay between patches is ...if you have different cabs on different presets,
it'll give you a delay between switching. If you use the same cab on a strip of presets..the delay wont happen...
a little trick for you v-amp users!
