the v-amp all the way. The v-amp is noisy and buzzy... which amazingly enough is what most amps sound like when turned up. Wow, that's a crazy idea. But it was able to give me the tone in my head, which the pod was unable to accomplish. The v-amp has a good user group and Behringer has been very supportive to all my questions.
Now, as far as micing a small amp and whatever...I bought my v-amp for 99 bucks. If you can sell me a mic and a small amp that will somehow get plugged into my soundcard and will give me the sonic and tonal variations that my v-amp offers, all without me having to plan my recording times around my wife and neighbors sleep patters for 99 bucks, I'll be the first in line to buy it. Until then, the v-amp is untouchable to me and my ears.
If we could get such great results with just small amps, mics and closests, wouldn't that put 'real' studios out of business? Hmmmm, there's an idea.
