I am a DJ using my computer to record the masters for my mixed tapes and voice overs.
I just bought a patch bay to use in my recording. I am trying to have multiple inputs routed to my alesis 3630 via the pb, then thru eq to my sound card. How do I set and wire the patch bay?
Right now the only signal to the patch bay is from my dj mixer. but where is the signal routed to in the patch bay so that I can connect the Compressor to the pb to process any singal coming thru it? I need patch bay for dummies.

SJ Thanks

I did a search before I posted. All the threads I looked at and forums I searched, turned up no fish. Thank you for the additional info. I can probably use that once i get past the basics.

I just need the basic on the joint. ie if I go in on the top 1 and 2. where does the signal come out for me to go into the compressor?

I think that's what's in that other thread (and the threads that it links to).

Perhaps more basic:

A simple patchbay like the Behringer has a bunch of jacks in the front and in the back, in two rows: top and bottom.

Think of them as being in groups of four jacks, each group consisting of:
-A front-top jack (call it "FrontTop")
-The front-bottom jack directly below it ("FrontBottom")
-The rear-top jack behind FrontTop ("RearTop")
-The rear-bottom jack behind FrontBottom ("RearBottom")

If you set it up half-normalled (often the most useful way to set it up), here's one way you could set it up.

Connect output of something to RearTop
Connect input of something else to RearBottom

RearTop is connected to RearBottom, so long as you don't put a plug in FrontBottom (that's the "half-normalled" part)
RearTop is connected to FrontTop
RearBottom is connected to FrontBottom

So:
Say you've got a Mic preamp, and a comperssor, and a recorder. They've all got line-level inputs and outputs. You could do this:

Connect Preamp output to RearTop of group 1
Connect Compressor input to RearBottom of group 1
Connect Compressor output RearTop of group 5
Connect Recorder input to RearBottom of group 5

If you don't do anything with the front jacks, they'll be connected like this
Preamp -> Compressor
Compressor -> Recorder

If you take a patchcord and connect FrontTop #1 to FrontBottom #5, they'll be connected like this:
Preamp -> Compressor (because you didn't put anything in FrontBottom #1)
Preamp -> Recorder (through the patchcord in front)
Compressor -> [nothing] (because you did put something in FrontBottom #5)

You can figure out more possibilities from there.
