I want to ask if one the Behringer MX802A or MX602A mixers would be a wise choice to use with my TASCAM 488. What I really want is an active mic preamp in at least 4 channels (my 488 only has 2 mic preamps). I would also like phantom power in those four channels also. So far I only have 1 mic that requires phantom power, but I plan to buy more in the future, will my regular mics work on the phantom power channels?

Yo Agent CJX:

I do believe you can buy a phantom power box which will let you connect four mics.

I had a couple of 488's and I thought if you turned on the phantom power switch, it activated all 8 track inputs.

The first two tracks have XLR connecters; the other tracks connect via 1/4 inch phone plugs.

Then, again, how many tracks do you need to record at once?

I'm not using the 488 any more so maybe my mind is foggy on this.

I don't have the 488MKII.... it doesn't have any phantom power built in at all, and it has no XLR inputs and has mic preamps on only 2 channels. That is why I want a mixer, besides the flexibity I will have with the sound going into the 488.

The two smallest Behringers you mention have only two outputs and no inserts. So you can plug in 4 mics but all you can get out is two channels.

The next one up the MX1604A, it has an extra ALT 3-4 bus, so you can use that and get 4 outs.

The list price of these things went down recently so you should be able to get one of those for $150 or so...

cjx, I think your money would be better spent on a used Mackie in the VLZ series than a new Behringer mixer. (check e-bay)
The quality control at Behringer is supposed to be poor,
escpecially compared to Mackie.

I have a Behringer 802a mixer and one of the channels is not the
same volume level as the others, at the same setting.
This developed within the last month.

If you can spring for the Mackie, do it. I know there alot more money, especially if the MX1604A is going for $150. I looked at the Mackie and the MX1604A and got a Mackie VLZ 1202 PRO for just over $300 new. Nice pres and I'll always have it. I don't think the MX1604A has channel inserts but it does have the Alt 3-4 which you will want. Deffinetly get the 1604 over the 802 or 602.
