hey folks,

i'm sure this topic has been covered, but nothing came up in a search. anyway, i've been looking for a mixer to use with my tascam tsr8 reel to reel and for general non-tracking use as well. i've heard all the bad rumours about behringer boards. i went to guitar center to audition various boards. i ab'd a mackie 1604vlz, a behringer 2004 (not sure of model, but it's the 16X4 board without the cheesy effects), and an allen/heath board. since i'll be only using the board to mix with, i'm mainly concerned with the eq and overall sound of the board. i auditioned an adat of material i had tracked (transferred from the tsr8). the allen/heath one hands down. but i could hear little difference between the mackie and the behringer. if anything, i liked the eq of the behringer just slightly better. and the behringer had a seperate power supply. so what gives with the bad behringer rap? i have an older composer comp and have used autocom's and even multicom's and really liked them. i think their effects units stink, but then again, i don't like many multi-fx units. any opinions?

also, anyone heard/used the new soundcraft m series?

thanks!

tony

what I didn't like about the 2004 was the mic pres...I guess you don't use mic pres if you're mixing. If you like the eq, go for it. The other behringer problem I hear about is each unit will vary considerably to the next. So just make sure you get the best of the bunch

thanks for the advice! what didn't you like about the pre's? and as compared to what pre's? just curious, and yeah, i have a couple outboard pre's i use to track. i wonder how they could differ? i have heard the quality can be spotty. but only with the build, not the sound. that is interesting tho'.

thanks again!

yup, don't buy a behringer for the pres.... they are just not up to standard....

one thing about bigger behringer board is that they tend to overheat and will shut down by themselves.... one of my friends has this problem and there's is nothing he can do about it....

I however have a modest behringer 602a and love it! :)

wow, just did a search and read a whole lot threads. that and this feedback has me rethinking. i may just save a bit and buy an allen and heath. or even try a used tascam board. i have a mackie 1202 vlz and just don't like the eq at all. any other affordable (~ $700) 16 channel boards with decent eq out there?

thanks!

you know, i owned one for a short time when i bought one of those adat packs. i sold it as i owned a mackie 24X8 at the time. so i guess, i owned one but no, i really don't have any experience with it. how does the eq compare to a mackie and/or an allen heath?

thanks!

yes have a look at the alesis mixer.

Like you I have a 8 track reel to reel recorder. Fostex R-8.
I´m using Alesis Studio-24 mixer.
You can go from recording to mixing without re-patching, and the EQ seems to be ok.
Have a look at this page.

What about Studiomaster? I have a friend that's looking for a good mixer (8-16 channel) in the same price range, and the Studiomaster Trilogy looks pretty good on paper.
