A question for the cheap gear gurus. Would ANY dedicated mic pre, even a cheap one like the audio buddy, be a step up sonically from the Behringer 602 mixer? Anyone used them both?

Most likely, yes, but you probably won't be able to tell the difference untill you address other issues; namely your room accoustics, the quality of the instrument/voice, a/d conversion, and accuracy of your monitors and playback system. And your ears.
