Alright, I'm not spamming for Studio Projects or Behringer, so just chill, okay. :)

But I got a chance to play with one of these recently, and I think I am on to something, here. Without sounding like a freakin' info-mercial, I think we have the new winner and reigning champion of budget conensers. Okay, so laugh at the Behringer name, but I am familiar with the Rode NT2 and think it's a great mic, albeit on the expensive side at $400. I'm familiar enough with it to know it's sound when I hear it and this thing sounds like it at 1/4 the cost. Unless my ears have completely betrayed me and I am a total dumbass, that is. Which is totally possible, I guess.

So I find out thing thing is basically a B-2 without the extra diaphragm and omnidirectional pattern. And the B-2 is basically a clone/ripoff of the NT2, and sounds identical to my ears. Except you pay $200 and part of that goes to the omnidirectional pattern -- something a lot of us don't need anyway (especially if we took Harvey's advice and bought Behringer's other kickass budget mic in the ECM 8000).

So it looks like Behringer decided to spare us the extra expense and come out with a single-diaphragm, single-directional version that basically has the same sound as a B2. Which has the same sound as the NT2, which kicks ass. And I guess they've decided to give us a case and a shockmount with it, too.

Now don't go thinking I'm some sort of Behringer implant. Heaven forbid. I just want to make sure I have this thread as proof that I was the first one to start shooting my mouth off about it. Because before long, every one of those annoying "Best LDC under $X?" questions will be answered with this microphone, followed by the Marshalls and SP's

. . . and you read it here first, damnit! :) Give me my due! :)

So there ! Ppppppttttttt ! ! ! !!

Chess,

We just received two of them last week, and were thinking the same thing. As far as it being the best bang/buck, that depends on whether you like "that sound." For the money, you can't ignore it, but I've never tried any of the sub-$100 Marshall microphones, or the Studio Projects B-1 (which I don't think is out yet). I would rather have it sound like a Neumann than a Rode, so I guess it's all relative. For the price, though, we figured it would be worth the risk, and I can't say we were disappointed. I'm pretty sure it's by 797 Audio, and I like a lot of their models.

We bought them because we needed a few extra mics for voice-over and broadcast, but now, I'm starting to think we might have another option here for music, too. And no, you weren't the first to discover it. Lots of people have been eyeing them up for quite some time, Chess. :)

What is the Rode NT2/ Behringer B1 frequency response like? What does it sound like, in terms of highs, lows, mids and all that jazz? :D

It's got a bump around 12 khz and a little above, I believe. Most of the other Chinese condensers have their bump a little lower, if I'm not mistaken. Maybe a little more airy as opposed to aggressive?

I for one am sick and tired of everyone following Chesrock like sheep arround here.

But seriously now I may just get this mic to add another flavor to my cabinet.

I have been posting the b2 is a nt2 in behringer clothing for about a year now, finally someone else is saying it.

I hope that alot of home wreckers benifit from this and take advantage of this deal.

Ba-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha. :) Darrin, I'm glad to know at least someone shares my enthusiasm. All two of us. Moonunit, have you tried these bad boys out yet on accoustic gitter or for drum overheads? I'm thinking of purchasing a pair for stereo micing. That could present some rather interesting possibilities, no?

Someone try it out so I don't have to.

$99 at 8thstreet. Baaahhhh......

Comparable to v67?

OKAY OKAY OKAY

It was a case of mistaken identity. Ya don't have to rub it in!!!

By the way Chessrock, you're not the only one who thinks Harvey is a redneck dickweed who wouldn't know his ass from a hole in the ground. It's okay.

...whistles dixie and looks around

Okay, I'm backing out now before things get out of whack again!

...but not before I get this jab in:

Okay, so you're a studio tanned dickweed that wouldn't know his ass from a hole in the ground?

Okay, now I'm done! I love you guys, really I do!

Get a sun lamp. Just don't mount it up high on the back wall of the control room and leave it on for long sessions like I did, otherwise you'll wind up with a really......ooops.

......never mind.

Hey Harvey, speaking of studio tan, did you work on any of FZ's recordings?

Nope, never went to any of the recording sessions. Went to a few rehearsals. Mainly we hung out at coffee houses together, although I went to his house a few times, and he went to mine a few times.

Ok, not that you all want to know, but the Behringers are made by 797. The Behringer B1...Doh, another B1... is the exact same mic as the JM-47 Joemeek USA version with a pad and filter. I did the Joemeek mic a few years ago when it was clear we could not import the ones Joemeek UK did as a result of the freight and duty.

So, I would say the Behringer does sound pretty good, because I think the Joemeek sounds good as well. The JM-47 comes with case and mount as well.

Thanks for the info, Alan. Do you know just how the B2 and/or Rode NT2 fit in to all of this? I have heard a lot of conflicting reports of how the B2 is, for the most part, an NT2 on the inside with a few different (cheaper?) parts.

Do you know how close this is to the truth?

Now I also noticed the frequency curve on the B1 is identical to the B2 . . . which is identical to the NT2. Am I being naive to assume that this will sound a lot like the B2 and NT-2?
