After some advice on this website, i've recently purchased the Audio Technica AT2020 usb mic. I have cubase essential 5 on my laptop and my intention was to record my own voice using this mic along with a backing track on cubase so i can make my own songs etc. Cubase has recognized my microphone, but it won't let me record with it. I have tried everything i poosibly can in the device setup and the only thing i can find different from the usb mic is that it only has 1 audio channel, compared to the integrated mic and speakers in the list which all have 2 audio channels. could this be the reason? i am out of possible ideas, could someone please help as i do not want to waste my money on this microphone!!

Emily, are the sound settings on your laptop set to recording?

make sure the track you are trying to record is "recording enabled". Make sure your VST connections are correct and you have the proper device selected. Your going to be recording in mono, so make sure your input is set to a mono bus instead of the default stereo.

And like bob said, make sure the actual sound settings on your lap top are correct.

I have changed the sound settings to recording. I will try it in mono, thank you for the advice. I am wondering if it was a mistake to buy the microphone? I make sure the VST connextions are correct but it will only let me use the AT2020 if i use the integrated microphone as well. There is no option for me to use only the AT2020 which is confusing :/

I use nuendo but there almost the same daw. Create a
New project - go into devices and choose vst connections - you should have for inputs 1 stereo in and outputs 1 stereo out - choose the input tab and select add bus a window should pop up saying add input bus make sure it says stereo for configuration and for L R the count should be 1 - if you want to make more inputs just add to the count. - press ok you have just made a stereo bus track. Now you should be able to record using your mic. Make sure when you record the monitor button ( it looks like a speaker ) is on it lights up yellow to indicate so. I don't know if this will help but I hope so.

thank you, your advice has worked. I have managed to get the microphone to record. My only problem is, it will only record when the "ASIO low latency device" setup is chosen. It will not work record when i choose "ASIO full setup". This results in low latency and creates a poping noise on my computer? :/ is there any way i could get it to recrd without the popping noise and by using th ASIO full setup?
