I hope I don't annoy anyone for posting VERY basic questions, But I was given ProAudio 8 and a Gadgetlabs wave 8/24 with soundcard.
Here's my prob.
I've installed the soundcard successfully (I have sound), but after installing CW and configuring it TO THE BOOK, I have no sound in CW.
Actually, after messing around I WAS able to import a wav file and got it to play. But even after doing this I tried to go back to the Tutorial .wrk files and was still unable to get sound.

Any help in heading me in the right direction would be SWEEET!

Pete

First off, what OS are you using? PA8 is a very old piece of software and does not work well with newer OS's like 2000 and XP.

Second, I'm willing to bet your soundcard is audio only. Most of the .wrk files are MIDI files. Unlike Soundblaster cards, most pro cards do not have an onboard MIDI synthesizer. You will either need another card with MIDI capabilities or connect and external module to your card if it has MIDI IN/OUT ports.

I'm running win2k.
And I am using the Gadgetlabs external interface, so I should be able to hear the Midi. Although, because I can hear wavs but not the .wrk (midi) the problem probably lies somewhere in midi in/out configuration.
As a side note, I noticed that when i look at my Midi Devices in the TOOLs section of CW it highlights windows soundrivers and doesn't even list Gadgetlabs.

bassface - I think brzilian is correct, I'm pretty sure the Gadgetlabs card does not have onboard midi. It probably has a midi connection on it - but that is only to allow you to connect an external midi device. This is also why you're not seeing the card under your midi devices. And also why you can't play the tutorial files (since I think almost all of them, except maybe one, are strictly midi).

You need to get a second, cheap soundcard with onboard midi, something like an SB Live.
(Holy shit, batman, that's the second time in a week I've recommended an SB Live to someone. I must really be losing it.)

However, you have some other problems as well. Gadgetlabs, as you may already know, went bankrupt. So you can forget updated drivers for your card. The exisitng drivers may work in Win2K, but I'm guessing you'd have problems if you go to XP. Also, you're really pushing things to try and run PA8 on Win2K.

However, if this combo is working for audio (which from your description it sounds like it is), then consider yourself fortunate and go with it. You'll still need something else for midi, though.

And I am using the Gadgetlabs external interface, so I should be able to hear the Midi.

How? There's nothin in the card or the breakout box to play MIDI messages, only an interface to pass them back and forth.

As a side note, I noticed that when i look at my Midi Devices in the TOOLs section of CW it highlights windows soundrivers and doesn't even list Gadgetlabs.

What does it list? The Gadget Labs MIDI interface should show up, but maybe it's not labeled with the words "Gadget Labs."

I think this may be getting me somewhere. THanks.
So, tell me, Do I NEED to be able to use MIDI in order to record?
Please don't trash me if this is a dumb question.
All I want to do is use this as a basic multitrack for guitar, bass, keyboards, etc.
Can I do this without the MIDI stuff you guys are telling me about?

Yes, you can

Get by without midi for now....but go back to it once you get the hang of your software.I used to be a midiphobe but I saw the light and now I'm totally whacked on midi, more power, more options, more more.MORE IS GOOD!
