Hey I'm a first time poster here. Any advice will be truly appreciated.
I'm using Guitar Tracks Pro to record vocal, guitar and bass, mostly. I've got good mics (SM-57 & 58), that I plug straight into the mixer (an old Fostex 4-track). What would anyone recommend as a next addition to this setup (besides a better mixer) I'm thinking of preamp for vocals (but I don't really know what this would do) and/or an outboard compressor to replace the version in the GT program. (Is this necessary?)
I'm not shooting for super high quality but if there's something that would help smooth the rough edges a bit (within a budget of say $300) I'd really appreciate someone's advice.
Thanks!

The Joemeek VC6Q would be a good choice. It has a good preamp, the famous Meek optical compressor, and musical EQ. It also excells as DI for bass. For three bones, it's hard to beat.

Your best improvement would be a Mackie 1202 or Soundcraft M4 mixer. The preamps will be as good as anything in the $300 range and you will get more of them. Plus it will make it much easer to expand in the future.

You would probably notice a big increase in your tracking, mixing and monitoring quality.

Thanks! Both of the above suggestions sound good. I think I may go with the new mixer first and try to build more on later.
Thanks again.
