Hi, I am totally new to recording and Cubase so this is probably a stupid problem but I’m having trouble with playback. Whenever I try and playback a midi or something there is no sound and Cubase keeps telling me I have missing/ unmapped ports (speakers ). So how do I fix this?
Thanks heaps:)

Moved to Cubase forum...

Are you using a recording interface or just the stock sound card in your computer? What is your computer?

Need details. :)

Basically you need to tell Cubase what to use. Devices>Device Setup...>VST Audio System. From the drop down menu you select the device you are using as your sound card. Then you set up your inputs/outputs in Devices>VST Connections.

Can't help much more from here without knowing what you are using.

the classic sign is that there are no outputs assigned, press F4, loot as the VST connections and make sure either 'outputs' or 'studio' have an output connected.

HI,

Thanks for all the help so far.

I use just the stock sound card in my computer which is just a normal PC- I guess? i'm not very good with computers.

Cubase will play back a MIDI file imported into it by using Halion, the software synth it hopefully installed when you first installed the programme. Check it's there, and with the MIDI file on the screen, just look at VST instruments, find Halion, load it, and then in the inspector box on the left, change the output to Halion, which will be in a drop down box. Then the file should play. If it's a MIDI file intended for GM sounds, it should automatically tell Halion to play the right sounds, but many of these files do not have programme change data, so you may have to manually load up the right sound for each MIDI channel. When you save the song as a .cpr file (the default) all these settings will be remembered.

Cubase is a great program, I've been using it for 20 years now, going back to Atari 530s in black and white. It is, however, very complicated for newcomers - even on the popular cut down versions. Persevere, it's worth it!
