Okay, thanks for all the downloads and comments concerning a recently posted mix. I thought it would be fun to offer up the same song, but with just "faders up" and some panning. No editing, no eq, no effects. JUST the raw tracks.

Here is the pre-edited "faders up" and "panned" mix. Done in Sonar. No mastering or anything like that. No clean up editing. Nothing. These are the tracks "as-is".

Here is the final mastered mix.

Enjoy.

bumping this back to the top, but have no intention of listening to it till tomorrow (it's late and have to work tomorrow...)

But tomorrow it will get a listen here.

damn, that double pedal is ROCKING! I'm grooving .. This shows a definite improvement from the other "faders up" mix of course.. I dig it man..

now what was the file we are comparing this to ?

I believe it's the two links in his first post.
they basically say b4 & after. I'm not sure about the earlier thread that he had going with the "faders down and no panning"

pipeline, the first link is the "fader up" mix of the "raw" tracks. No editing, no eq, no compression, etc.... The second link is the finished mix, with editing, eq, compression, effects, mastering, etc...

definately a big change from a playback mix to a final... I felt the intro gtr had some electrical buzz, which seemed to also be brought up to a more noticeable level, when the ac. gtr level was brought up too...where it is noticeably faded up from silence ...right in the very beginning..first notes. Also, the 'mastered' mix seems to be lacking in real low end stuff. no chest thumpin' stuff...especially the drums. Seems like the drums were fairly "dead" sounding to begin with...like the ole' 70's kinda sound. A very dynamic mix for sure, but seems the EQ is off a tad off over the whole mix it seems to me. Maybe these items I didn't really care for where really made at the tracking stage, but this is one hell of a final mix with what you had to work with. Now that I think about it, I think my gripes about this ARE basically items that could have been 'fixed' at the tracking stage... before the mixing, mastering... except for the lack of low, low end stuff.

I couldn't agree more with ALL those assesments mixmkr!

I had a thread going in the Recording forum that listed some of the horrors of tracking this band.

About the only trick available to hide a lot of the problems with poor performance is to take away some low end. :) The 02R doesn't help with thing much either. I am also seldomly fond of mixes where the client calls the shots. In this case, they should have just gone into the tracking room and PRACTICE their chops while I mixed, instead of offering their assesment of how things sound. :)

Try downloading "Worm". Little more low end present in this mix. Still nothing earth shaking. Because of severe intonation problems in the original bass track, the guitar player retracked the bass right before we mixed it with a bass he borrowed. In this case, his lack of skill on the bass (uneven picking and little skill in "rounding" notes to each other) kept me from displaying the track too much.

Wow. A dramatic difference. It was really cool to listen to both versions back to back. It's nice for an amateur like me to hear what's possible. I'm keeping these two to use as reference points.

One specific question - what did you do to the kick drum to get it to stand out so much in the final?

Thanks.

I beat the hell out of it! (and a few other things that probably made more of a difference, but that is my little trick I dont' usually share with strangers...;))
