Clam Soup

Project 49
First off let me say that I already love this place. In the time that it took to become activated here I got to meander through the forums to see if my questions have been asked/answered. Some were close - just not quite close enough. So here we go!

I'm running Cubase 5 and Windows Vista. For some reason (probably me) my input shows as "Not Connected" everytime try to record. This might take a few conversations to get me through because when it comes to technology I have the aptitude of a turnip. The output seems to be recognized and active, so it is just input that somehow keeps escaping me.

I am so ready to get started.

I have an Alesis Multimix 8 FX. It is supposed to be "plug and play" with the USB connection.

I might have diddled around too much in the process of trying to figure it all out and messed something up. When I first uploaded it, it was recording through the computer's mic rather than the mixer. But, in my attempts to fix that, I've lost all input signals.

I went through the whole tutorial that came with Cubase - including starting a project. When I open that project it says there are unmapped ports.

My conclusion so far is that I'm really stupid!

It's telling you the last thing you where using as an interface isn't there anymore. What ports is it saying arn't connected. You need to go into device setup in cubase and select the Alesis. Check the top thread if you don't know how.

This is my first recording setup. I've never had/used any interfaces. In Device Setup Alesis does not appear as an option. Input appears inactive - and output shows active.

If I uninstall and then re-install Cubase? Maybe I did something wrong in the initial installation.

I would think it's an alexis driver problem if it doesn't show in the cubase device setup window.

Installation of Cubase does not seem to be the issue. Sounds more like a driver issue. Go to the Alesis website and download the driver for your model/operating system. Install it. Then restart Cubase. Devices>Device Setup>VST Audio System. Select the Alesis. Let us know what happens from there.

Thank you jimmy... heading there now with one eyeball twitching and the other spinning in circles.

I REALLY hope that these companies pay you because you are 100 times better than their technical support.

LOL! I get paid with feeling good by helping others. This site saved me ?$$? and a buttload of time with the learning curve. Pay forward goin on here man. Let me know how it goes. I'm always around, and there are many WAY more knowledgeable that myself here.

Well.... I don't see any downloads for the drivers at Alesis. I'd already talked to them (a horrible experience) and they suggested it was a Windows problem.

I don't think it is Windows, Alesis, or Cubase - I think the problem is me. I think I'm following directions, but I have to be misunderstanding the whole language of the technologies in front of me. .... I'll go back to the last email they sent me and see if a light doesn't go on in my head.

Get this thing running and I'll send you a Christmas halibut!

LOL! Hey man, I'll give acadeko a shout. He has the same setup as you. Maybe he will have more direct advice.

I love halibut!!!

I'm sure I'll end up writing a song about this ridiculous journey. It wasn't that long ago that when you bought something like this you could call customer service, on an 800 number, and someone could walk you through the whole thing in about 5 minutes. Now you have to call some guy in his basement who leaves you on hold for 20 minutes and then offers to send you an email that explains it all.

My mom could never learn how to drive a car. Apparently I've inherited a portion of that gene - I can't learn how to driver my pc.

Do you have the alesis driver installed?

MultiMix 8 USB 2.0 Integrated USB 2.0 audio interface and mixer (click docs and drivers) make sure you get the proper one 64bit/32bit

that driver will create a control panel in windows - make sure Alesis is selected as in and out as well as in the sound control panel.

in cubase go into VST connections, make sure it's selected there then go to VST mappings and create a bus - assign the L/R inputs

- the FX unit only does stereo out via USB

HTH - lemme know what happens :)

I've got the zip file on my desktop, but noticed in my owner's manual that it is supposed to be 16bit. The driver installed properly says USB CodeC. .... and it works for output but refuses to be an option for input.

do you have it selected in Devices > Device Setup ? did you restart cubase after installing the driver?

16 bit is not for the driver, that is recording

the 32 or 64 bit driver depnds on what version of Vista you are running 32 or 64 bit

Are you going into VST connections and setting up the input buses? Just because it says inactive in the device setup window doesn't mean it's not working.
