Beats...

I see alot of you guys are into buying/selling beats. Do you buy/sell a mixed backing track or are the session files/individual .wavs available for mixing?

honestly it depends who u sellin to..... if they at all serious about what they doing they will demand the beat be tracked out..... but if not and they dont know any better then yea id sell a premixed beat... (it would more then likely be a lease of the beat tho not a outright sell or anything even close to it lol)

It's basically the same thing as Fyre over here. Except that I usually don't give the session along with it, even if it's for exec rights. I would mix it for them, but never does a session or session files leave my hand, usually.

whats the purpose of givin the session if they got the tracked out beat like why would they ask for the session?

Some producers want the session to be able to add or manipulate the original works. That's the main reason why I don't include the session unless they talking major money. And even then, I would still do any changes, and include it in writing. Other producers want to be able to run the session through something like Nuendo and change all the instrument sounds to some real nice sounding VST's, changing the whole beat prospective. Ever heard your Reason beat with top notch instruments?? Love it. but anyways, yeah, some prod. want to have full production power, especially when they dropping $120K on production.

I agree with Set. I don't hand over sessions. I will hand the tracked out beat with a mp3 or wav of the complete mixed beat, but even that is rare because most cats buying don't know what to do with it.

I've only had to track it out a few times.

Im sayin is them changin the instrument sounds really a bad thing if it state in the contract that they can do it but u still gettin your money and album points or whateva for the track?..... iown really see a big problem wit them changin the sounds so long as they dont try to cut u out on your pay by tryin to say "naw we changed such and such making it our beat"

But that's what they do. If they change up your original session, then they can try to say that you never took any part of it. I've also seen some who didn't copyright their shit (that's their own fault though) and then get ripped off.

Game's full of sharks. Wouldn't put it past one to come out and say it was their beat so that they don't have to give you a cut of shit.

That's good advice, I was kinda wondering what the deal was when someone is 99% set on one of your beats but wanna change one thing in the instrumentattion or need to EQ some space in for the vocals. I guess if you mix to their requirements it's all good though.

You agree to either track it out or correct it for them to their specifications. Unless I'm getting seriously paid (which won't happen because I usually deal with solitary artists or small indie labels who can't afford that kind of price anyway), the session stays with me.

Plus, I have the option of using old beats for advertising and promos. I just can't resell them.
