I thought it would A Good Thing to get involved in beats and loops and such this year, natural enough for a home recordist, yes? But I also believe in consulting the experts, and in this case, that's you. I've got two questions.

The first one's easy: by default, I'm gravitating to ACID and their loops library. This is a great place to start, right?

Second, and more important. There have been drummers I've heard that were so good you couldn't help but get excited and love 'em or cry, depending on how you were feeling. But coming to sequencers and loops and such, my question's this: do you ever listen to looped or software-generated beats and genuinely admire what you're hearing, genuinely get excited? I like Portishead's work and I love Bjork, but the beats are just part of the setting for me there. Listen to whoever's drumming for Ry Cooder, by contrast, and I ADMIRE what I'm hearing. Anyone?

Fiona Apple

Yo dobro!

I know that Fiona Apple's got a real drummer, but you can hear a lot of loops and samples in her music. Especially from her latest album (the one with the title so long that it covers the entire front of the CD). I honestly admire these loops. They're original, they've got a sound totally all their own, and they ADD to the song.

Now personally, I won't be moved as much by that as I would be by listening to say Steve Gadd or anyone drumming for Steely Dan, but, in context, loops can be VERY impressive. Especially if they're thought out well and they have a new sound to them.

I don't know if you've ever paid attention to it, but take a listen to the song "Caves of Altamira" by Steely Dan. Call me a simpleton, but THAT'S drumming to me. Tasteful and atristic and skilled drumming. But anyway, go for the loops if you can do something original. Take a listen to the Beastie Boys sometimes too, they've got some original stuff from loops taken from the Beatles to something so whack you don't even know what you're listening to. But it's original, and it makes you THINK about how they did it.

Dear Tax

Thank you. That was useful. Caves of Altamira is about the only Steely Dan I haven't heard. I'll listen again to the BB.
