Beats or Lyrics?

I'M BLESSED.......
I have a library of beats I have accumulated over the past three years. But for the fist time, I had someone come to me with a song and ask me to put Music to it! I found it a Hell of a lot easier to do! It is harder for me to come up with Lyrics for beats that I have in storage. I have a friend whose forte is just that! (SO I just play my position) Do anyone else find it easier to get an Artists concept, and then supply them with instrumentals? VERSUS Coming up with a nice instrumental and finding someone to put Lyrics to it? Which do you think will get a project done quicker not necessarily better if you're under time constraints..................I'm not Panicking, just a thought!

I usually make an instrumental and then let the artist put lyrics to it. Sometimes I get a writer's block (if correct) and can't come up with anything as an instrumental. That is when it becomes easier to get ideas from the artist rather than myself. In other words, either way works for me.

But it's eaiser for me to come up with an instrumental and then have lyrics added... and then make changes to the music or add more. This may take longer but for me it's easier.

I too rather just create music and let an artist do their thing. I've tried writing lyrics, but I know electronic music production and dj culture are my thing.

I rather create music and let an artist do their thing too, but sometimes it seems like it takes too long! I need more patience!
I can do 2-3 Instrumentals a day and come back a couple of days later to clean it up! But when I collabo with someone who already have Lyrics with a Melody. I can Finish a whole song in a couple of hours and have it ready for recording. Does that make sense?
I like all aspects of recording, but like I said I need more patience.....

to me its easier to have the instrumentals and let them go through and find a song that fits..or they can give me inputs on what they want in the beat as long as they are there with me..so the beat can be on point like thaey want..i have done this a few times...like i gotta a sample hook and chorus to a song..can i cant get the beat i want to go with the song for spit..and she wants the song to be a club banger..but i think it just should be a upbeat r&b song..i will get it tho..i alway do.. :D

hey

I find it easier for me to flow with a beat. but i also find that i am somewhat limited to how i can lay it down if i already have a beat. so i guess it's a half n half thing ya know.

Usually, when I complete a Hip-Hop or RnB track, I'll give it to one of the various artists that I know. Since I've know most of the artists for years, I can tell which track will fir which artists style.

I let them write the lyrics and chorus (three fourths of the time I collab on creating the hook).

Now, if an artist comes to me for a beat, I'll let them choose from the tracks I already have in storage.

So....... to answer the question, I'd have to say that I would rather make instrumentals, in comparison to the idea of creating a "track on-the-spot" to what the artist wants. :D

My views would be different if we were discussing the same matter in relation to producing "house music".

Beats and lyrics are 2 different trains of thought, and as far as I'm concerned, should be handled seperately. Whenever I create an instrumental track, my focus is on the sound of the track only, not with lyrics. If you try to include thinking about lyrics as your creating your track, your creative focus becomes too broad.

But as far as the topic goes, I have always created the instrumental first, then come back to the project later to brainstorm lyrics that would suit the song well.

It is related to music structure..The bass and drums,/Percussion,(identify the type of music),the lyrics,(identify the message),the melody,(identify the specific song),and the harmony,(is the foundation of the melody chords sequencies).Dr.Zaragemca

I actually just completed a project in which I did the following:
I had an instrumental in the archives with no particular thought for a song. ( I actually made it for rap)
A local R&B cat was at my house and he was feeling the beat and he already had a song established, which he was humming the melody to. Let him tell it, it was a remix of his original Anyway, everything fell in place, we got together and did the whole song over. But of course I had to go back into the instrumental and redo the chorus and verses, but it was so easy because I had the original piece as a base and I was just experimenting with different bass lines and percussion breakdowns and it was just very easy to do VS starting from scratch with no particular direction. But I know many people are much more comfortable doing that than myself. I rather (1)give an Artist a beat,(2) see what lyrics and style they come up with, (3)go back in the lab and make changes that will enhance the songs capablility.

Well the thing that i found interesting is that Eminem Writes his lyrics and then makes the beats around the lyrics.... which is an Extremely intelligent approach, i mean that would take some work! thats why i have the upmost respect for him... he's truly talented

I guess that is not the NORM
But I know a few people who write songs and fill in instrumentals afterwards. I tend to get ideas from my instrumentals for hook purposes then my brother (Who is the lyricist) can hook up the verses, that is where he excels..........Then like I said earlier, I go back and add effects and breaks etc. . . .

i got lyrics so that's no concern

i wrote for years before i could get my musical thought out of my head.and get the means to get it in a "physical" form.
to keep from sounding like other headz we made a point not to use popular instrumentals i.e no songs from the radio (easier said than done? i know fortunately we had access to a radio station along with all the b-side instrumentals to make our songs with).

so i have "volumes" of lyrics that need beats.
as far as beat goes i just make them sometimes the fits sometimes they don't
and sometimes you make a beat and the the message is clear you know exactly what to write to it, or you get that instant hook

Totally agree.
