hello,
well im looking for a mic preamp now and i want something that will give me an approximation of the mic pre's the beatles probably used on their latter recordings.... does anyone know what type of pre's they used and what clones are out there?

I read George Matrin's book "All You Need Is Ears" and I think he mentioned they used a Studor desk circa Abbey Road although Neve pres may have been present also.

Borrow it from Lenny Kravitz?

In a recent issue of Home Recording Magazine (the one with the Beatles on the cover) I think they mentioned that Lenny Kravitz now owns one of the desks from the Abbey Road studio. The comment was something like this... "It's only a 4-track, so I just use it for the pres..."

I can't recall what brand it was, if someone doesn't fill in the details before then, I'll check when I get home tonight.

ya queue i read that too a couple of months while browsing at borders but i was a moron and didnt buy it. wish i would have now in retrospect.

If you beleive everything you read in that article, then all you need is:

Neumann U47
Telefunken pre (optional?)
EMI Desk
Studer 4 track
and ...

"Ken's ADT"

oh yea, Studio 2, #3 Abbey Road

(now all you need is talent, and some good engineers?)

ya i went over to recording.org and popped the same question to fletcher from mercenary audio and the others . they really gave me the low down, such as mic pres used from the beginning to rubber soul, then all the way to consoles used in the latter years... so it looks like ill be saving for a Telefunken/Siemens v-72 preamp and a brauner vm-1, better get that job at barnes and nobles over the holidays;)
thanks people!
here's a link to the preamp of my dreams

Queue,

If you want to hear how the V72 sounds, We did a mic pre shoot out. We used a Dan Alexander V72, Focusrite Red, Neve 1089, Trident-MTA "A" Range, and for Ha Ha's, a Joemeek VC1QCS. The Meek is $600.00. Some of these others are $6K.

Anyway, we only used the Studio Projects mics, and did various takes of two different style tunes, both with music, and solo. This was done very scientific and was done to show how our mics stacked up on different mic pres.

You can read about it by clicking http://www.studioprojectsusa.com/spnews.html
Click on the Sessions Download and read the test. If you want the entire audio CD, just get me your address and I will send you or others the CD for free. Use the download to reference each track.

The results are pretty amazing :D

Zack, what a stupid question. The beatles couldnt afford pre-amps, so they just sang really fucking loud:rolleyes: After they broke up, Lennon was so poor that he had to move in to an apartment. Brian Epstien was so poor that he commited suicide.

Get some fucking facts before posting in the future. The Beatles never had money until Paul married Camera-Girl. They Tried to score a pre-amp for Sgt. Pepper, but Led Zeppelin bought them all, so they hired the London Symphony and said " Everybody play real fuckin loud, we cant afford a preamp, because Led Zeppelin just sold 350 trillion albums".

Facts, man ,just the facts...

thanks for setting me straight david, i cant understand why i'd believe those fools at BBC
