Here's our (me & glazierman) rendition of a great Beatles tune. Really appreciate your feedback.

Thanx

Really like the drums in this one, and the rest of the instrumentation is pretty darn close to the original... Good job....

*waiting for the cover police to enter thread*....:D

Thanks for taking the time to listen. Yeah there maybe a lot of covers but it's more about the technical aspect of recording for me. We'll have to work on posting some original material. Maybe we could cover a police tune :D.

very nicely done guys !

btw ....cover police ...bite me...

if you dont like the cover or just that its a cover too bad...deal with it

Cool. Had to check it out -such a fun song. :) Everything's there but for the bit of that 'raw edge vibe on the original. To toss out a guess- how about vocals up a bit but let some more attack slip through (or lower ratio?) on the limter?

Sounds great. Love the roomy, natural drum sound. Sounds just like the real thing. :)

I like it, really well done. A couple of quips (mainly because I'm a hardcore Beatles fan, so deal :D )

I felt the guitars seemed too dry, not lush enough.
I wish the piano was an octave lower, especially during the quarter note triplet licks during the chorus.
Guitar could probably be a bit louder.

I like how the drums are up. My biggest beef with the Beatles' stereo mixes is that the drums are too quiet.

Nice!

Really nice!

I'd like to hear you and your friends record "Taxman"

Thanks for the feedback. The vocals have no compression on them at all and in fact I was concerned at bit about that but I get what you're saying. If you listen to the original there is a huge amount of reverb on the vocal tracks and while I did put a considerable amount on our version, I didn't want to wash out the vocal tracks too much.

Love to here from hardcore Beatles fans :D Yeah the original has huge amounts of reverb on it and I was concerned about going over the top a bit. I think your idea about the piano part an interesting one and may give that a go.

Thanks for taking the time and providing some ideas.

That's interesting as they seem leveled' to me. Go figure. :) The drums don't so that would seem to rule out 'mix comp?

Stick a fork in it, and...

call it done!..........;)

what was the siginal chain for the drum recording, and since i'm new here what exactly are you using for the recording in general? How/where were the drums tracked, they sound really good, and the recording sound very "finished."

Thanks for the comments.

The signal chain on the drums is as follows:

Me :D  on a set of 1970 Slingerland drums (snare on this track is a new DW w/wood hoops) using 4 mic set up. OHs are MXL603 (recorderman technique), SM57 on snare (top) & an Audix D6 on the kick. Everything is run into a Focusrite Octopre then directly into an Alesis HD-24.

At mix down everything is run into a Soundcraft Ghost. For the processing on the drums I used a Symetrx compressor on the OHs and a TC Electronis M300 to apply some reverb.

ok this is what makes no sense, I have a decent kit, and have the same overheads and snare mic, but use a AKG kick mic (i think its busted or somethings up because all of a sudden its overloading my pres/sounds distorted) into a Digi 001, and a audio buddy pre for kick and snare, and my recordings sound nothing like this. I so don't get it.

It can be a pain but hang in there. I can tell you that most of the drum "sound" is a result of the overheads (obviously it starts with the drums (i.e. tuning) themselves). I have gotten very good results using the recorderman technique so it is my go to setup.

If your OH channels can't stand/sound good on there own, you will have an up hill battle getting a good sounding drum track. That's just my opinion but, it has been my experience that every time I have the OHs sounding good, the overall drum track falls in line.

Thanks again and good luck. You might also what to post some of your drum clips on a new thread and get some feedback.

ok so i think, now not sure here, but maybe my 2 audio buddy preamps are either defective or cannot take any sort of high output microphone! I knew this was a problem when the MXL603 VERY easily clipped the audio buddies years ago, but i never even realized that my snare and bass drum mic were probably clipping as well, when i got the digi 001. How the hell do people use these shitty preamps, also they're randomly flucuated in volume and just sound bad.

I need to get a new 2 channel preamp that would be at least as good as the digi 001 preamps if not better. I only recently got the digi 001, i had been using 2 audio buddies into a delta 66 and always wondered why my recordings sounded really "messy" I think i was clipping the input on the pres and always catching some distortion! Anyway..... whats a fairly cheap decent 2 channel preamp, that sound "good."

crap sorry i can't figure out how to delete this, i was going make a new post and not ruin your thread
