bing bang bong here another song

I did this in the morning and couldn`t play the guitar. In the end I started beating it like a drum. I then did the guit in two takes, cutting my finger in the process. I don`t like the singing.

I hope you don`t mind me posting another thread, but its a new tune all the same.

Good night

Can't sing anymore? I Don't think so. You seem to get better every time I listen to you. I'm not saying that I don't enjoy other artists here. I do. But you seem to have a style that even though seems to be born of many that came before you, is nonetheless new and fresh. I too have to leave the recording comments to others. Having been a performer for many years causes me to have an interest in the style and quality of the performance and yours is top notch. I could call you a new millenium minstrel or something like that.

I like it a lot. I like the use of the guitar-drum and the backing vocals. I think the guitar drum is a little too "upfront" sounding. Maybe try throwing some reverb on it?

Well bloody hell, it's you:)

I had already heard your songs and gave you a thumbs up review. Then I came here and found your post!.

I currently play winebars and a few other acoustic venues where I live and you would be booked anywhere for this stuff. I think your singing is great, its that 3am in the morning smokers gravelly voice that I like. Guitar playing is wonderful (what guitar is it?).

I have a desire to put some bass on one or two of your songs, I might give that a try and post it back to you if you would like.

Your recording quality and production is tremendous - I am very impressed.

I would like to see some more bio stuff on your Nowhere site. Please post some more details of yourself and your setup.

Bottom line? I would buy an album immediately if it was available. And If I lived near I would love to collaborate, your stuff is right up my street.

Keep on makin music, you are definately on the right track.:)

Erland....you are bastard just because your stuff gets better everytime I hear it!!!:D

I like the layering in this one A LOT. I dont agree that the guitar drum is too up front though.....I like it right there and that dry actually.....a lot of character there.

I like the panning a lot over all....you made wonderful use of the spectrum.

And for all the things I have listed, I hate you:D

heylow

BTW...can you talk a bit on how you record? What you record on? Signal chain, etc? What do you put down first on a tune like this?

Thanks

hi

samicide - is that really B.Sabbath or another wee joke I never understand. ANyway, glad you liked this one. Its supposed to sound live ish so the mix is less important to me but thanks anyway.

Gitfiddle - minstrel, sounds tastey. I would love to here some of your stuff. I really like accoustic sets (obviously). What you said really made me smile, later.....

SalJustSal - thanks mate. I decided to keep it upfront becasue when I lowered it, it sounded confusing or like a bad bongo. I thought if I kept it up front and personal, atleast you know what it is. The shaker is also loud. The guitars were not recorded well also and so could hide better.

Paul881 - hey, hi. Thanks for that nowhere review. This is the best site ever by the way. I`ve been here for a few months now and discovered nowhereradio and many fantastic people too right here. I live further up north from you, Scotlands nicest capital. I don`t really want to put bio stuff on, I thought perhaps it would be a bit pretentious. Thanks ever so much for the critique man, what I use is a very tinny old guitar that isn`t mine (nobody knows) but I do have a cheap washburn that sadly sounds worse. I look farward to checking out yours soon, thanks Paul. Hey keep playing in the bars, thats cool.

heylow - well, ok I`ll try and be worse. Thats cool, that what I thought about the guitar too. It kind of grabs your ears for a while. I put the extra vocals on later because It didn`t stand out enough. I`ll hunt down your stuff now you realise! (Hang on! I already have, its outstanding, I downloaded three of your songs) looking farward to it. Ok then, I`ll be blunt. I don`t know what signal chain means. I use a boss BR532 and a wee shure 606. I would love a really nice mic and soon I will get one, but after graduation. What I do is I get the melody and song pretty much done in my head and then perhaps put a metrodome tick on and play from start to a finish one track of the song. This track is very rough but acts as a guide all the way. I turn it down a bit and then add a better guitar on another track. I use a pair of walkman headphones and get the levels sounding alright with the compressor effect. Using little headphones actually means it will ulitmately sound alright on little headphones, get that? I also don`t have anything else. Perhaps I add more and some panning and make the guitars sounds as best I can or want. (I said this in the other thread) Once thats done I add the singing with all levels turned off so it sounds really dodgy and you hear all cockups. then I add reverb to it or everything and mixdown because there are only four tracks. I added the banging and the shaker (tube of gravy granuals this time) to the tick after. Then I muck about until a second vocal fits. I keep mixxing down to two tracks each time something new is added, this makes it hard to go back. I hope that makes sense? bye for now.

thanks for the interest!

just edited the post!

you got in just before me. Your stuff is outstanding! Bowie voice, got the conection now. Cool

Cock up = screw up.

It' sounds great. :D a good song.... dododidododododoo....

It remainds me somehow blind melon and a song called "soul one"

Erland, I hear what you say about not putting any bio stuff on the Nowhere site but you really must. You have a great sound and people want to read it - look at the response you have had here. So go for it.

As for the gravy shaker percussion, cockups, and modest approach to gear that you have, I'm begining to hate you too:D

Jesus, if you had a load of decent gear imagine how you'd sound?

I am listening to your song as I post this. Sounds a bit like Jack Bruce, "on my way home".

Strong song you have there, great voice and well recorded. I like the chorus voices too.

Erland, good stuff again, you're like a song factory here lately. What did you do? Find drugs, love, religion, or some existential experience?

Seriously though, were you really just banging on the guitar? I tried that once and it sounded like crap. I tried making a homemade shaker once and it sounded like crap as well. You must just have a midas touch.

Damn, you are good.It just keeps getting better and better.Ive been waiting for the first dud to roll out of the door, but you keep firing the hits man.

I think I have enough to burn a CD of your stuff now.I have 11 songs or so of your music now.All good stuff.

How did you get that shaker again? Gravy granules? :) Was it recorded in stereo, or just one track center-panned?

You've got . . . it. Not sure what IT is, but you got it nonetherless. No limits. Good stuff, my man.

Guess I best go and get more o' your shit, I like it!!!!!!

Agree with all previous posts about your talent and my inability about being able to say much cept I like it!

Only teeny nit-pick is I don't like is the line where it says "the stuff that's good to do" just sounds kinda obvious and cheesy to me, though the rest rocks, and flows nicely. Also like when the shaker gets temporarily drenched in verb, maybe use that a couple more times, though it serves it's purpose.

damn Erland....I've been trying to write this song for like a year now :)

freaking awesome man. I love it..

the guitar grabs you just like you said....just this nice rolling feel like some of Zeppelins stuff..

The guitar work actually kind of reminds me of "Lucky Trumble" - (don't ask...just the vibe of it).

The melody in the chorus is just awesome....it sounds so...meaningful and strong. Great work...

-Wes

btw: gonna check out the blind melon song someone mentioned...always liked them.

I agree that Erland has great natural talent and song sense, but I think he could use a little less adulation and a little more helpful criticism-

Erland, I think this song could use more development, both from a songwriting and recording perspective. The basic melody and chord structure IS pleasing and infectious, but almost too familiar; it sounds a lot like 70's folk-rock. And you might want to develop the lyrics beyond the one basic idea, which is repeated over and over again.

You pointed out that it was recorded kind of on the fly, and it does sound like that; less polished than some of your other stuff. The vocal sounds a bit strained on the high notes and could use some deessing. It would be nice to bring out the guitar a bit more. (The vocal's not too far out in front of the percussion but it is too far in front of the guitar.)

Again, I'm holding you to a really high standard because you deserve that!

my bla

Riku - yeh that do de do bit just had to be done. Couldn`t resist. I enjoyed that live song of yours.

B.SABBATH - thanks B.

Paul881 - hi Paul. Perhaps. That was a real nice thing to say. Glad you enjoyed this one too.

JohnWaynesTeeth - Ha, tell you what it is. Whenever I`m supposed to be revising or working for Uni I just have to start and finish a song. Pretty fun procrastination? Yup, The mic was really close to the guitar with a bit of reverb, good laugh. And I used a bit more gravy on my tee for this one, it gave it a higher pitch sound. Man you make me laugh...

Kramer - Well the next has got to be a duden. I learn from you guys and try and make the next a bit better. I get really involved and have to finish then ultimately you guys tell me if it ok. its a good way to wrte with no time. Thats cool that you kept the songs. Is my learning getting better or the same? bye mate.

chessrock - yeh, thats it. I just used one track. I`ve never recorded in stereo before, is that using two mics and tracks obviously? well you`ve given me a big fat smile.

laj35 - :o. I am really glad you notice the wee reverb bit but that wasn`t actually the shaker, you would laugh if I told you what it was. I should have done it a bit louder I think. Hey definately cheezy, I agree. I think I wanted to use a word that isn`t always used in songs, "stuff" but yeh perhaps it does sound to common to be in a song.

wes480 - Hi wes. Very glad you liked this one. I did the words and song on a Sunday whilst reading a certain book and sipping a nice juice. I thought man, Its great to be young. You liked the the drum, cool. I`m going to check out the one Paul said too. Later mate.

LI Slim - hi there Slim. I don`t know what to say, I just want to write and have fun but thanks for the good criticsm. Ultimately it was a spur of the moment thing but I totally agree with you. I did another song but I don`t think I`ll post it just yet, perhaps I`ll go over it again.

Bye
