2 of my mixes for this 9th grade band that came by to record. these are final mixes - but i'd love to hear comments on them still...lol

anyway - more importantly....
the mix with BBE Sonic Maximizer(set to LOW = 3, HIGH = 3) hurts my ears...yet seems to sound better....i hate it.

the other mix is with my very low mastering skills...

I hate to say but I think I do like the BBE version better. But I would back it off a bit I think. I know this is a final mix, but the vocals need serious normalizing.

These guys sound fantastic for 9th graders! Hell...fantastic for most of what I hear these days on the radio...and that's almost being honest...

yeah man, i like the BBE version too( even though i have no clue what that is:rolleyes: ) but it sound's " fatter" for lack of a better word.

thank's for sharing man!!

peace

im in 9th grade and thats ALOT better music than just about anything i've heard from anyone at my school. The vocals seem a little thin and out of place to me. And the kick is to up front for me at places, but im also listening through some crappy speakers so that could be the reason.

the bbe version does sound better.

by the way,

i really like that guitar sound, what amp/guitar is it?

I've gone through the same thing with every new effect that's come my way. The first tendency is to use enough so you can really hear what its doing. I have discovered over time that less is more. First you do have to go overboard a bit just to know what the thing does, but like a spice, a little can go a long way.

Hey Shack,

Not a bad job of mixing at all.I really cant hear a big difference in the 2 mixes. The mix you did without the BBE plugin could be made to sound more commercial(close to it) with just a little bit of high end eq to give it some open air....that will just pull that blanket off that seems to be laying over the mix....you did a fine job of getting the levels right and spreading things out in the mix.

Good job.

nice nice, all this is good to hear.

BBE suggests both the settings at 6/10 (lo and hi)...so i already did back up to 3/10 (on both lo and hi)...

perhaps in the future, i can just eq the high end a bit, and maybe at 1/10 or 2/10 BBE on the mix...depending on how it all sounds..

oh yeah, and - marshall amp distortion, i love it as well.
miced it about 2 inches away from the edge of the center cone. with an sm57

Sorry to interupt, but THAT is cool....... :) Im off to listen.....

....Damn these talented kids nowadays:D

.....Really cool for 14 years old, really cool. Im with the majority Shack, the BBE sounds a bit better here. Cool stuff man,

Not bad shackrock. These kids are talented fer sure. They seem a little hurried, but I guess that's youth.

Even thoughthe BBE sounded a bit more well rounded, I liked your mix better (seem to be the only one). I thought it had more clarity in the guitars and vocals. I agree with the vocals needing normalization and that kick is way up front. I'd like to hear the guitars a little more up front and more punch from the bass. But overall it sounds good, these are minor issues in my listening and of course I have crappy speakers here at work. Nice job, I wouldn't worry about these being final, I think they'll pass :D

thanks guys.

and yes - comparing my skills and experiance, i'm extremely happy with the mixes.

i'll be recording my band in the next month or so...and i'll hope to get better results (a - better musicians...no offence to my 9th grade friends, just more experiance..lol.......and b - i KNOW how i would like to get US to sound...you know? you always can mix better when you can already imagine what it'll sound like..ha).

Not bad for 9th graders. They sound pretty accomplished, so I'm sure in a few years they'll really be great.

I listened to both mixes and I think I like the BBE mix better. The raw mix sounded good, but I thought the drums were a little bit too out front -- imhop -- I know that is really a subjective area .. :)

Nice job on these!

I think I like the BBE version a bit better. However, I think the BBE version took a bit too much out of the midrange.

I like the singer's voice, it fits well with the band's style. But you may want to recommend some coaching. He's a young guy, I know. But there were pitch issues throughout.

Nice mix...I think it needs just a tad more high end. That being said, I like the BBE mix better for what it is. I think that you recorded it really well to begin with though. Nice and clean. A little tweaking here and there and you dont even need the BBE. The kids have a great sound, a little intonation problems here and there with the singer, but the more they record that will become appearent to him and he will work it out.

Thanks for sharing
God Bless

These guys are much better than I was at 14, so I don't really have any music-related comments- except for that the singer should consider coaching or a pitch-traning course. He's got the voice, he just needs the pitches to be on to sound good.
Now, as far as the mix goes, I really like the drum sound, but the whole mix sounds very dry and sterile. The guitars, however, sound distant, as if they were all picked up by a single omni floating over the room. The BBE sounds better than the non-BBE version, but I think that the BBE should be reduced just a tad.
Having said all that, I have listened to your previous mixes and they keep getting better, so keep working on it.
-Claudio (who has a tendency to drown everything with reverb.. grr)

I think that the singing sound a little off because of the performance. There is lots of energy in the song, and not as much in the vocal. Also, he slides into the notes when it might sound better to hit right on top of them. I really like the mix, and the BBE does seem to help it somewhat. Sorry if I seem to be slagging the singer, I don't mean to, but I wanted to point out that the mix may not be the problem.

Sounds good, those guys can rock for 14!

Funny you should mention the BBE,I just started using mine again last week on everything but vocals.
Seems to make for a bigger, clearer sounding mix.
I use it at differant settings, according to the instruments.
(Mine is so old,it's one of the original mono models.)

Nice work!

Pete
