Wanna see what a couple of wraps of bubble in a carton box and a 37LB TEAC 1230 look like ?? Take a look at the picts below (with commentary). This was shipped via USPS (not UPS). Again, the fault is with the seller.

HERM .. I'm with you man!

Here, the plastic thing that covers the middle motor has broken off and it's cracked AND the motor is loose. The right motor (not shown) is also a bit loose and the power supply looks a bit bent ... :(

That's IT!! I'm quitting eBay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Doesn't anyone know how to pack ???

How the hell am I gonna fix this ????

Daniel .... :(

That is why I don't buy off of eBay. There are plenty of places to get stuff and meet te seller face to face, or go through a broker who will guarentee safe arrival. I would rather pay a littlle more for safe arrival and guarenteed to not get ripped off. Dealing with people you have never met just does not pay off reguardless of how much of a "great deal" you think you are getting.

Sorry to see this BTW

If you can't afford to gamble, don't ebay.

Ok, great ... so what are the other options ? Build my own machine ??

I bought a phone off ebay. The picture showed a nice, $250, solid oak wall phone. I thought I was getting a deal at $45 plus shipping. So when it arrived I was a bit pissed to find a $50 particle board with plastic laminate (that looks like wood) phone, that wasn't even close to what the picture looked like. And to top things off, the guy just dumped it in a box that was the *exact* same size at the phone. No bubble wrap. No news paper even. Now what dop you think the phone looked like when I got it?

Well...the reciever was cracked in half. Which was either due to the weight of the phone of a combination of something falling on it and getting jammed into the phone.

But anyways. I got it. Almost 2 weeks after it was shipped via Parcel Post for $15.79 when I paid $37 for Prioty Shipping.

But hey. Ain't life fucking grand. :D

...And let me guess ... The seller took no responsibility and told you to file an insurance claim with the shipping company ? ..... That's what happened in my case .....

What type of feedback did your seller have ? Mine actually has substantial positive feedback and restores open reels .. go figure!

I really have to know .... Are people really THAT dumb to pack in this fashion ??? The only person that I know of that actually cares about packing (other than myself of course ;) ) is Rolf, Vintage TX. Take a look here:

Sorry to hear about your phone btw .... :(

The seller had 5 positive feedbacks and no negatives. All for sales. So I took a chance.

Well...lmao...turned out it was the sellers son. The day after I sent my money, Ebay sent me a letter that his account has been suspended and that I should not send money and just ignore my winning bid.

:omg: !!!!!

So they say to complain to PayPal because they can't do anything about refunds.

So fuck Ebay. (even though I have no self control and will more than likely continue to use ebay...as I am currently bidding on a thing or two...)

But even PayPal hasn't gotten back to me. Its been well over a week now.

But for what the seller said...

"I have packaged over 12 items and shipped them with no problems. I know how to ship"

"That phone is what the picture is of. I looked on the back for a model number and found the picture on the net"

"The auction clearly states that there are no refunds and isn't that what insurance is for? I will head down and see if I can get a refund tomarrow."

Uhhg. And then after a few emails...I get somewhere with this fucker.

"I would be more ok with a partial refund, but I spent all the money on school supplies and books. I can send you $15 now and some more in a week but someone (uhhem) filed a complaint and my PayPal account is suspended until resolved. I could send a money order and then send another $15 after you lift the complain."

Ya fucking right!

Its worth $30 (or $87 if you count the whole transaction) so this smuck ain't got a PayPal account or an Ebay account.

I took one for the team guys. :P You can thank me later.

(And I have his address and an arial satilite photo of his house I found on a certain internet site. :) He WILL be getting a Christmas present from me this year. I have decided not to proceed with getting the money outside of PayPal. Hopefully he forgets about me so on Christmas he has no fucking clue how a package of bloody pig guts found its way to his doorstep.)

And if you are reading this....Its a small world. I do have to make it up to that part of the country once in a while. :D See you soon.

Here is a question... Not to high jack, but I think this thread warrants it.

What does it take for everyone to feel comfortable when bidding?

Zero negative feedback?

Enough positive that its at least a couple hundred to 1?

I hate buying from people that just sell endless amounts of shit on eBay that they probably have never even fugured out how to use even know what some of it is for.

Then again...2000 positives with only one or two negatives isn't bad either IMO.

I just bought the original Star Wars widescreen box set (no digital efx :) Happy? ;)). 150 positives with only 1 negative from a whine glass set that broke in shipping. I still feel pretty good about it.

I feel for ya man .... It's one of the many eBay horror stories ... There are other times, of course, that a transaction goes well and you can breathe a sigh of relief ... Too bad the "negatives" out-weight the "positives", at least in my experience.

My seller has about 280 feedback, 100 of those from buyers, 3 negs and about 85 (he claims) from reel to reel sales. The seller pretty much stood by his packing methods and basically told me fuck off (not in those exact words mind you). I told him to work on the insurance claim himself, as the sender has to do it. We'll see what happens.

Good topic. I think this should be explored.

IMHO, feedback is only a part of the picture but honestly, I DO look at feeback as basis for my bids. HOWEVER, my latest experiences tought me that even that is not enough to guarantee a good eBay experience. All you can do is lessen the risk. So my basis for sellers getting my bid continues to be good and substantial feeback BUT this forms only a part of my decission. Other parts are good, clear photos, fully answered questions when asked, whether the seller takes PayPal, is able to pack to your specifications etc ... See, when I can pay via PayPal and if the item arrives not as described, then I can get reinbursed. That's all I think .....

lol

I won't even look at an item unless there is a little camera next to the listing. :D

I have seen one too many listings with the phrase "perfect condition" and then has a picture that displays something that has obviously been around the block a few times.

I have found that one thing I look for, when a box or original packaging is include, is what kind of shape that is in. Stuff with big bulky boxes aside (because they usually get tossed in an attic or used for other various things), when the box is in perfect condition it seems that the item was also give better than average care.

Sorry for your loss there cjacek I understand just how you feel. :(
I have come to just accept that I only have a 50/50 chance of getting a good item off of ebay no matter what the rating that person has.
A lot of seller get buy just fine with no bad feedback cause most of the item,s they ship are smaller and are not as likely to be damaged by the devil UPS. Its when they ship something big and heavy like a recorder that they know nothing about is when the problem occurs and they dont think it their fault.
When it comes to weather or not you get your money back or not is pretty much up to the person you purchased from cause no one (ebay, paypal, or what ever or who ever is involved its will be up to how honest that person is.

Yeah, bad!!!

Hey, I've been there & done that, too many times!

I had a Tascam 38 thoroughly smashed, from all sides and angles. Totalled it.

I had two or three Fostex A-8's and a Fostex 350 mixer that were cracked up severely. The Fostexes have never recovered from that, to this day.

I've had a nice Technics RS-B48 cassette deck, or some number like that, which was cracked in the upper right corner, but not too severely.

I think I've had more damage, that I'm simply having a mental block about.

Oh yeah, I had a "fixer" Tascam 244 that was pretty well smashed up, too.

That, and more. I got a Tascam 388 with a pretty severe corner ding on the woodwork, much like the picture above.

I have pics, too. I could dig up & post them, if you're really that interested.

It's ALWAYS the seller's fault, for inadequately packing the device. That's how & why UPS can always wash their hands of the issue, because it's always inadequate packing. Not that UPS is known for their gentle handling of boxes, they are not, but it's always the seller's responsibility to pack the items to withstand being handled by "Timmy the Gorilla".

My sympathies to Daniel & Herm, & everyone else who's had this problem.

UPS, alone, has cause the early demise of many a classic piece of hifi audio gear. Forget digital killing analog, it's UPS!
