OK.....so I have been recording for many many years and finally I am looking into permanent treatment for my room. In the past I have put single bed comforters hanging off the corners and the room was fairly cluttered with stuff so I got good live drum tracks. My question?????.............Don't the comforters do the same thing as bass traps? Now ....when I finally get around to making and placing the real traps do they go from the floor to the ceiling
with no gaps at all or is there supposed to be a space somwhere at the top or bottom? Is it important to treat the wall behind the trap? I have looked at Ethan's site and it is really helpful I must have missed the answers to certain stuff!!!!!Finally .......would it help to have treatment on the back of hardfaced wooden diffusers and I have a beamed wooden ceiling............does that help diffuse the sound waves? Thanks................

Kind of, but unless your comforter is extremely heavy down, chances are it's not as effective as a bass trap made with 703 insulation. Also, by varrying the size, thickness, and distance from the wall you can absorb a wide range of frequencies (broadband absorbtion). Using a comforter you really have no idea what you're getting. But you can calculate to within a certain degree of accuracy what freq's a hand-made bass trap will trap.

Is it important to treat the wall behind the trap?

No, there should be air behind the trap.

beamed wooden ceiling does that help diffuse the sound waves?

Yes, that would help diffuse sound, but you'll still want some absorbtion up there.

For 1/4 that money you can build solid 703 'super chunks'.

I didn't see any specs for those RPG's either - other than an NRC of 1.0 - which tells me nothing.
