Bass Question

I just received a brand new Fender Deluxe Active P Bass Special from americanmusical.com. This thing is amazing! One slight annoyment though. The body was probably surrounded in plastic wrap at one point to keep scratches off, but there are still little bits of plastic hanging out under the control knobs. They're too small to get a good grip on with my fingers. I thought that maybe the knobs will screw right off, allowing me access to the plastic bits. I started trying to unscrew one knob, (counter-clockwise of course!) but as I went past it's usual stopping point it got bumpy. I quickly stopped and turned it fully clockwise again, afraid to go any further as it might not be meant to screw off. So, is the bumpiness normal? Are guitar knobs meant to screw off without being damaged?
 
Often the knobs lift off the spindle!
You could then undo the nut whilst holding the spindle & pull away the plastic bits.
You may have caused the whole pot to rotate under the cover! Careful! Do the fully on fully off positions on all the knobs correspond? Is the one you played with out against the other?
Knobs rarely screw off as if they did they might come off in normal use.
 
Some Fender knobs have a tiny set screw (through the side of the knob to the spindle) to hold them in place. Loosen the screw then pry the knob straight up to remove it. Once removed you can get to the nut which holds the pot in place, loosen it to remove any plastic wrap. Retighten the nut, replace the knob, tighten the set screw and you should be good to go.
