Choosing the right bass when using old school 808 dums.....?
I have thousands os bass sounds in my samplers and other keyboards...Im looking for somthing compared to the latest radio hits ....like jaru and the like....Are these real basses? and if not how do I get a good sounding bass?
Or is this just a question of recording ......use of compressors..and what not...Any help would be great...Im having a hard time getting the 808 to sound good with at least one of the dam basses I have.. Also a friend of mine says I should try combining a couple of basses together...but in my mind (and I could be wrong) this would great a muddy sound?.
any ways Id like to hear what some of you people out there do to get that killer 808 and bass combo.
Much Thanx

try to answer this the best I can.....may be I'll just give you some thought..............

alot of hip hop the bass follows the drum kick exactly....meaning everytime the kick hits the bass hits..............with people like ja rule...and everything out of murder inc......... you'll notice that they have a pretty even blend on both drums and bass........ one isn't higher than the other but I think they take them both and compress the hell out of it....unlike doin them seperately......

You know who you should be chasing is Dre....... and Ludacris (Lately) their stuff is really sharp....the drum-bass combo on their music is so in your face and crystal clear.....................the drums are usually higher in this instance

As far as Ja rule is concerned though...actually murder Inc period........ There musical preference isn't driving head nodding music so there stuff is on que but not banging...... which if thats what your looking for I would go with a real Bass Guitar not samples.........

get more drum samples............. combine 2 together that can blend...lottsa compression and or run it through a doubler some verbage and just mess with it till you get the right sound...... most times bro the mix down is where you are trying to achieve the sound....just the samples alone will sound like shit...when you start the mix down thats the point where you need to take the high's down here...bring the lows up there...and so on till it blends correctly.....

One more note about murder Inc ...........................................................................................................

STOP USING AUTO-TUNE

Atillah,

I'm sure Gec will correct me if I'm wrong, but have you ever heard Ja or Ashante sing live? They completely suck. They must have been using pitch correction of some sort in the studio. I guess I don't hear the definitive Auto Tune sound (think Cher) in the songs but it had to have been used to make them sound anywhere near good on the tracks.

I may be wrong though.

or not singing live is anutha key........ The worst display of auto tune I ever ever seen is the I'M Real remix with J lo and Ja-rule

A year ago they actually had the ball sack to perform it live at the music awards I was flawed at how awful it was..... I mean a fuckin mess .... the worst sounding live voices I have ever heard in my life and they were the 2 biggest stars in the industry.....................Funny thing is I almost couldn't believe it....really I was fucked up ova it ''' it was so bad.....so I decided that I had to watch the replay of it...... Guess what...............they dubbed the radio version ova the voice......thats fuckin bad

I can't ever remember a time hearing Brittany spears sing live..hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

A good song to listen to is J Lo again (she is the queen of auto-tune) "Waiting for Tonight" clear example of auto tune....listen to the track as if it were your own and your tryin to pick out flaws...............you will find it in this track for sure

Thanx gec for your reply...Your right about dre and lud...I have to say dre is my fav.. in the sound department lately.. I dont realy like Ja myself or the sound but this is what this singer chick wants so..you know..
Im interested in knowing what it is your using...gear..kits..the list
:)
I have millions of drum samples so much it makes me sic...
Im using (as far as gear go's)
Triton<-- its alright
MPCXL<-- dont realy like to much
EMU Ultra4xt<-- realy love, The best!
nord lead 3<-- love it
bass station<--- ok ¿
OLD Juno 106<-- for the odd bit, or just to sit there and look pretty
couple of amps couple of guitars...
all going to a Mackie 32/8 and my la-2a, and avalon compressors.
then into the motu 1224 and finally into the G4's hard drive using logic as front end.
so thats me....
anyways ill stop ranting and just ask you people out there what samples your using and how can i get my hands on them if I dont already have them.
Thanx Much

I use vst instruments for most of my deep bass, never the acoustic bass instruments, sometimes the samples, but not usually....

if neccessary I could put a short(very short) example so you can chack the quality.......

use that bass on the triton called "R & B bass" or something like that. That is a real good bass. You can compare that bass to live guitar bass. That is what Dre uses to make his tracks most of the time. Of course, it won't sound like Dre's bass straight from the triton. You'll have to tweak it up.

I posted a similar question and got this answer; EXPERIMENT. In doing so I personally found compressing the bass and kick together to be the killer combo for real deep and punchy bass. It will probably be necessary to EQ the two of them separately depending on the sounds you're using. A deep 808 for example is not going to contain hardly any hi-mid to hi frequency information. A bass guitar on the other hand will.

I'd say a good kick/bass are not dependent on the sound as much as how you process the sounds. Different sounds require different EQing and compressing so there is no fixed values.

Hope this helps

Well, not trying to sound like a no it all or anything but Dre doesn't play his basses nowadays, which is bogus; instead he hires bass players to play live bass. He's a fan of live instruments and analog recording so maybe this is why his basses sound so damn good. This puzzled me for years. The R&B Bass on the triton is really good, but Im still an old skooler so I still use my acoustic bass on there, I donno; lol. =-)

Peace

I also read that Dre uses live bass about half the time.

You can try a compressor or maybe just play with the quanitize off.

I got this thing made by Peavy called the Peavy Bass. It's been sitting in the corner cuz even though it's got some trill basses they just are so wide open and synth sounding it wasn't fitting in the mixs like I wanted. I had an old Alesis Nanocompressor that's been sitting up for a minute too, so I put the nano on the Peavy Bass and there it is. My very own unique bass sounds. Probably do the same with the Synth and some subs from a Yamaha drum module . Sample some of that into the ASRXpro and I think I got my bass for the next year. At least the rest of the year.

Lazi, I use the Spectrum Bass too. I really only use maybe three of its internal sounds. I just filter the shit out it, drop it by an octave and layer it with a bass sound from one of my other modules. I also lower the cutoff frequency on occasion.

I've been doing it that way for a while now. Makes real phat basses, in some cases too phat but layering bass sounds is a great way to thicken things up. I got the idea from an interview I read with Jazzy Jeff if you can believe that.

When I had the Peavy in my rack I was only finding maybe 5 sounds that I was feeling. That's why I ended up pulling it. After peeping it with the compressor I saw I could add more punch to it and take away the extra phat. I'll probably sample some bass notes and layer it with the subs from the Yamaha. The Yamaha RM50 got drums that are just way too clean and punchy. The the 808 subs will fuck up a woofer easy though. Layer that with the Peavy and hopefully get some crazy phat bass with hellafide punch. Probably run the bass samples from the ASR or MPC.

Layering the bass is the shit to do. Forsheezz.
