I'm thinking of grabbing a Nady DM-90 to record bass amps and bass drum. Any oppinions? Something better in the same price range?

DI box or the like on the bass can be really rad when mixed with a 57, I've also dug an AKG d112 on a bass cab, but for the true balance, it's been best going direct... and it's so EASY!

on the kick I love the shure beta 91, but no one around here will even talk about it, and I don't know why.

Probably because it's out of a lot of people's budgets.

I have used it before, and I concur. It is a fine kick mic. I've gotten rather thunderous, floor-shaking kick tracks using one in the past. It's the kind of thing I'm sure could really push a subwoofer and/or potentially blow a speaker if you weren't careful. :D

For bassy instruments, two mics I happen to like a lot are the ksm-32 and the CAD equitech and M-series -- both condensers. The CADs are linear all the way down to like 10 hz, which is an awful impressive stat/figure. And something about the ksm-32's embossed diaphragm, I believe, seems to make it unusually responsive and tight on the lows (the AT-4033 has a similar thing going on).

As for dynamics, the EV RE-20 also seems to handle the bass frequencies nicely. ATM-25 has become a standby.

Though it's meant for guitar amps, I tried using a Sennheiser e609 on an SVT cabinet the other day, and it sounded really good. Tight and punchy, but ample low end to work with.
I use a Beyer TG-X50 on kick, and I like it a lot.
