Bass Guitar straight into Mixer?

Sorry for this basic question, but I'm new to guitars and just got one.

Can I plug a bass guitar straight into the mixer? What's up with this impedance matching? Can I damage the mixer by plugging it directy in?

You can, but you're not going to get the best sound that way. Invest in a direct box. Most models are under $60. Or if you want a step up, try the Tech21 Bass SansAmp.
