i love negative rep
i'm thinking of getting a distortion pedal for my bass, i'm not trying to re-invent the weel here, i just want something decent.
i was looking at the big muff pi (see lots of other bass players use it)
what of the 3 versions is the better?
what other bass distortion might you recommend? (that you have personally used)

say about 130$ us or less

thanks

The big muff is great. I own a few versions of it. My favorite is my '78 big muff, not sure what you can get them for on ebay, perhaps in your budget. I like the big green russian one as well.

Another favorite pedal for bass is the comptortion, its the one made famous by the bass player from Ben Folds Five. Awesome sound that is more easily taylored to your sound than the big muff, but not as raw.

Actually, I like to use a guitar player's amp and turn it all the way up. It makes sum purdy lights. :D

I've used a:

Boss ODB-1
Big Mufff
DOD Blues distortion somethin or other
Marshall Jackhammer

all to good effect in a live setup. My fav was the big muff but the ODB-1 was better for a harder dist. than the big muff.

i saw a bass player use two Boss OD-1s at a gig once.

sounded awful.

he was somehow getting the most squealy feedback imagineable. not intentionally. it was horrendous. whenever he stepped on the second one, it was worse than just about anything i'd heard from a guitar :P

sorry, that's as close as i've come to bass distortion.

i'm sure it'd sound cool if done well though :o

I always wondered what he used in his setup. That thing definitely gets nasty, but its still cool sounding. On "Song For the Dumped", thats definitely some down-and-dirty bass distortion.

The ZVEX Wooley Mammoth looks interesting for bass. Never tried one though.

Danelectro fab tone, sucks for guitar but rocks on bass. It's a ton of distortion so if you want light edge steer clear.

I've been using a ZOOM GFX-707 guitar efx pedal for recording and live. My bass sounds awesome with distortion either way. It was cheap, too. I bought it for 6-string and 12 string guitars, but was amazed at the tones you get using the Ric bass.;)

Had it for over 7 yrs. and had no problems.
