bass effects and a question

The question is

What is a compressor/limiter as it applies to bass? Does it make everything (lows, mids, highs) the same volume? Because my lower notes seem to definitely sound out while my mids mainly sort of get drowned out by another guitar. Or can that basically be fixed by and EQ pedal?

Now, I plan to get 3 pedal bass effects: limiter (compressor I guess), distortion, and chorus. Should the chain be guitar->limiter->distorition->chorus->amp.

The effect your compressor can have on your bass can be dulling the high Freq content and distorting the low end content. and muddying the mids.
The lower the compressor quality the more you will have a chance to have such problems.

I cant tell what is happening to your bass with out hearing and fully understanding the whole chain.
You might not even ghave a compressor problem but a mixing one.
It could be you are distorting with your settings and making the mids sound more prominent. If you are setting the attack to fast you might be reducing the high freq content dulling the sound.

You have it right.The compressor pushes down your loudest notes toward the quiet ones so that it all evens out.Be sure to set a fast attack time so the compressor catches the very fast transients of the initial part of the note.
As to order of effects,try chorus,comp,dist,amp.

Tom I disagree, on average the effects sound best in the order of dynamics, effects (distortion), time based. If you compress a distorded sound it will loose alot of the harmonics

So, given the following: chorus, compressor, and distorition, what would your chain look like coming out of the guitar?

I realize there is no right or wrong answers here. It's all a matter of taste but I appreciate you guys giving me tips.
 
Compressor distorion chorus, even better would be if you have an effects loop, put the chorus in there, sounds beter imho.

Actully you have to be carefull with catching the initial part as you might reduce the punch.
