What is your opinion on whether or not to have one..what differece will it have in live and recording? Should i put the mic in or out?

You pretty much have to have a bass drum hole if you want to record it and get a good sound, if you put the Bass drum Mic on the outside you will get more of a boomy bass drum sound without any real attack which doesn"t sound very good....

I just cut a hole on my outer bass skin and put the mic nice and close to the beater.....

yeah i think it makes a difference for what mic you choose. the dedicated kick dynamics are meant to be put in the hole pointing at the beater so they are pre-EQ'd to work there. Although the Beta 52 works okay with the big gretsch kick I have here with full heads, my Apex 205 ribbon mic makes it sound really great. I don't know if this is because I simply prefer the 205 on kick or I just prefer it on drums without holes in the resonant heads. Regardless in my case it's 205 all the way - the Beta52 has moved to floor tom

I have 3 kits, two with holes - one without. The one without is my 60s Ludwig, and I like that boomy sound on that kit.

When I do use a porthole I mic just inside the drum, not right back at the beater. I like my drums to sound like drums.

I would recomend cutting the hole. Getting a great kick tone can be tough enough without trying to make it harder.

I like the pillowy sound of the big gretsch here with no hole and a ribbon mic outside. I get the attack, as much as I care for, from well placed overheads

recorderman is good for getting more definition. i personally think no hole sounds cooler - fatter and tighter
