bbllaahhh..

I've been a dedicated clean-sound bassist, even if in a couple of metal bands. Tried something years ago, and just didn't find anything that didn't cut the lows or the "thump" from a palm-muted note.
(No matter how much I've trained, I just can't beat the attack, speed and precision of a pick with my fingers, I was a decently doublepicking guitarist younger..) :(
However, been hearing about big muff, and woollymammoth etc. from bandmates and friends, and I figure I'd better get something..

So, please argue what's the best bass-distortion, so I'll get hints on the subject!! :D

Dunno, but you might try splitting the signal and combining an unprocessed tone with the distortion so you don't lose the low end.

boss bass distortion pedal can give you some good sound if you tune it up right

Do you want a fuzzy sound, or just a nice overdriven tone? For the latter, I'd suggest the SansAmp Bass Driver DI.

MXR M-80 Bass DI. It lets you adjust the clean signal with the distorted signal, with the BLEND knob. $130.

Fulltone Bass Drive. Three distortion modes from peach fuzz to gravel. Boost channel on a separate button. Level, tone, boost vol, and drive controls. I love mine.

I would say just go try some out with your bass, different people will like different distortion tones on the bass. I like the Big Muff for bass distortion. I would definitely take Scrub's advice and have a clean tone in there as well, or even try something with a crossover and just distort the high end, and leave the low end there for the rumble.

Have you heard Orion or Anestesia Pulling Teeth by Metallica. Listen to it and tell me if thats what you want and ill tell you how to get that sound ;)
