Hey folks....I'm looking for some suggestions on a D/I for recording bass...price range of aboaut $100-$300 or so. Also, what should I be looking for in terms of features and such. Thanks in advance.

Many people here, including myself, have been really pleased with the Tech21 SansAmp Bass DI.

Art Dps Ii

I purchased an ART II for a pre amp for vocals. Actually I was disappointed with it on vocals. I gave it a shot as a DI for bass on a song I'm about to finish. It actually sounded incredible with the bass. I used the keyboard setting with the bass and was very pleased with the result. I think MF has it for about $260 with a free MXL mic.

I suspect, in that price range, what you may have meant to say is you are looking for a preamp for your bass. A "D.I." in the traditional sense is just a little box that converts your 1/4 inch iunstrument cable into an XLR mic cable for around $29. A basic "DI" doesn't have any "features."

Even though it is becoming more common for people to refer to a stand-alone instrument preamp as a "DI"......

I was just dinkin around (that's all I ever do!) with my LR Baggs Para Acoustic DI and it actually worked quite well for my bass. But a decent little tube preamp will work wonders, also...

I have good luck just running my bass thru a simple DI to record it, then play it back thru a 4-band parametric eq to get the tone I'm after.....

Me too. I use the rack mount RBI unit. Love it!

Actually, I meant just a stand alone D/I. I have several pres, and I have a couple of the cheap D/I's, I just find they don't sound as good as I'd like when I've used them. I'd like to upgrade. I suppose by "features" I mean things like, should I go active or passive or both and why? The sansamp that was recommended obviously does some other things...as does the bbe direct box I was looking at. And from what I've read, they all seem to have their own peronsality. Also, I need the thing to be able to split the signal to send to an amp, as I tend to prefer to record and blend mic'd and D/I'd tracks sometimes. I may need to re-amp at some point also. Anyways, I don't know a lot about the things (until the last few hours of reading anyway) and I'm looking for some suggestions from people who know better. Thanks for the responses so far, and any future recommendations.

ART Tube MP does this pretty darn well, and can do the split.

Yep, I second the ART Tube MP, . . not a bad little device for a Bass DI at all, . and at 50 bucks, It's definately worth a shot!

I too recommend the Tube MP by Art. I had one laying around that I don't really use much anymore but when I tried it on bass I was impressed. The tube gives it a nice little compressed , clean, strong signal. As far as bass goes ,I actually am preffering it over the lo-z ins on my DMP3.
