Bass amp recommendations ???

I picked up a used electric bass yesterday. I need a decent amp, one that is a good monitor while playing, but I also might use it for recording tho- I'mma mess with recording/sampling both straight from the guitar, but a lotta people say mic-ing the amp gives you a nice sound, so I'll probably be using it for recording from as well. I'd rather not spend too much over $100 (bass only cost me $50).

My brother has an amp that was given to him for an electric guitar.. it has gain, treble, and bass controllers.. I presume its probably a guitar amp- could I use that with the bass, or will it damage the amp?

Any recommendations for instructional videos or other ways to self-teach would also be helpful.

You 'can' use a guitar amp with your bass...but you REALLY lose that 'deep' end and tone...yeah, you can adjust it...but it's not the greatest...go ahead, fork out the $$$ and nab a BASS amp...it doesn't have to be great...someon'e gonna shoot me for saying this, but even the 'CRATE' amps get the job done...and they're CHEAP! When you're on a budget...you're on a budget. Good luck.

My verdict is:

You can play a bass with a guitar amp,
but it SOUNDS like you're playing a bass on a guitar amp. Not as full. And for learning, you'd pick up far better if you can really HEAR your instrument! Ya know? I guess it would be like setting your snare drum up in front of your bass pedal...it works, but does it sound right? NAW!
