I am trying to set up a PC based system with ethier "N-track" or "Cu-base". I know "N-track" is easier to work with and cheaper, but I already have Cubase (I was suckered into by a shady Sam Ash salesman into buying it. He told me I could record right into my computer's mic input with a guitar cord and an adapter. Obviously this didn't work so well!)

Anyway, now I'm trying to find out exactly what I should save money for. I have a gateway PC with an AMD-K6 processor, 128 MB RAM, and a 6 GB EIDE hard drive. Is the AMD-K6 OK? I heard Pentium III's are better.

I am thinking about getting the new "Mackie 1202 VLZ PRO" for mixing but I'm not sure I need it. (The monitoring on Cu-base has a really anoyoing delay so I thought if I had an mixer I could monitor externaly.)I like to have a good mixer for when I up-grade my studio, but I heard that the preamps on low end mixers are not that great. Is the Mackie any good? Should I just get a single input pre amp for recording my mic, giutar and keyboard? I only need to record one instument at a time.

As far as sound cards go I just have the one that came with the PC. Can I live with this while I learn the software? Will I get decent recordings?

What about MIDI? My computer says it has a "Maestro MPU-401" and "Maestro WaveSyth" but I don't really know what these are? I can't find any files on them. I have a Korg X-5 Midi keyboard and it worked great with my old 1994 Mac with opcode's "music shop" but I now want to record digital Audio as well now that I have a better computer.

Any help about any of these topics would be greatly apreciated. Thanks!
